Dria didn't know how long they had been driving but knew that her legs were getting tired and the road seemed never-ending.
The twins had since been unconscious not waking up from their comatose state. Although their condition seemed stagnant, she couldn't get her father's words out of her head, they rang like a bell in her head.
"They won't make the change by then..."
As they drove deeper into the night, the tension in the air was palpable, each passing moment weighed down by the uncertainty of their situation. Dria sat between Marcelo and Elliam, her fingers intertwined with theirs, offering what little comfort she could amidst the chaos. Outside, the darkness seemed to press in on them, broken only by the occasional flicker of the moonlight breaking through the trees.. In the front seat, Pierce's hands gripped the steering wheel with white-knuckled intensity, his eyes scanning the road ahead for any sign of danger. Kane sat beside him, his expression stale as he too kept his eyes on the road.
Jeremiah's voice broke through the walkie-talkie, "Just an hour left to go, we'll be there soon," then there was silence.
Pierce looked at up at the rear-view mirror up at her and offered her a small smile but she knew it was for the benefit of her comfort, although she could see the nervousness creep up behind his comforting eyes. He looked away as if knowing she could see right past the smile.
She turned her head towards the racing trees behind them, questions burning in her throat. She sighed and turned to Edrick who sat next to her, "Who's Seraphine?"Edrick, having been laying his head against the window, lifted his head slightly and met her eyes, he shifted them to his feet before meeting her eyes again, "Uhmm, I don't really remember her that much but I knew she's a witch, well was, she prefers to be called an oracle. My dad used to go to her a lot for medication to suppress my powers for school, I only ever met her that once during my shift, I can't remember much other than the fact that she was young, really young and didn't look like a witch at all."
Henrietta gave him a small nod and hummed as a response before asking, "Was it painful?" she paused, "The shift I mean.""I am not going to lie, I was passed out for most of it, my dad said it was easier that way, said it would have been more painful if I wasn't."
They sat in silence for the rest of the ride and Dria pulled the twins closer to her body as she went back to looking at the pacing trees outside the car. It only seemed like a second later and she was out for a light.
She woke up in a meadow, flowers blooming around her and the sun high up in the sky creating a soothing warmth around her. She looked up at it, bringing up her arm to shield herself and she breathed in the fresh breeze that flew past her, and she felt her shoulders relax as the sun continued to melt her. In the distance, she heard a small laughter and she looked around her and there, just at the edge of the meadow, Marcelo stood waving at her.
The laughter echoed again and she watched as Marcelo ran towards her laughing his lungs out, Elliam following after, his hand reaching out to touch his brother, determination written on his face.
"Run Marcelo, Run Marcelo, he's gonna getch ya," she heard herself bellow out with laughter.
Marcelo ran faster but Elliam finally got to him yelling, "Tag, you're it" and whizzed past him towards her. The laughter of the trio echoed in the meadow, as the game kept on and on until a gunshot rang through the air.
Her heart stopped, her eyes widened as she searched for where the gunshot came from and then suddenly another one ran off. Her heart dropped, she turned to the twins to usher them to safety but before her eyes, Marcelo and Elliam held onto their chest, blood coating their clothes and both their eyes watering as they whispered, "Dria, what's going on?" before falling to the ground.
