'Chapter 40'

The sun rose above the clouds, and the sound of the engines rumbled to a stop at an abandoned gas station.
Jumping out of the vans, the silence was defeating.
The group huddled together in solace.
Katerina held onto Edrick tightly, Jarred leaned against the vehicle his eyes closed.
Kane leaned on Dria who snugged herself into Price's warmth. The twins lay asleep in the vehicle, under a blanket for warmth.
Seraphine stood in the middle looking out into the abyss of the woods surrounding them.
"Are they dead?" Jarred's voice horse, as if having not spoken in a long time.
Everyone's eyes turned to Seraphine anticipating her answer.
"I don't know, I can't tell," she answered after a pause.
"Why can't you tell?" Katerina questioned, her voice but a croak of her emotions.
Seraphine sighed, "It means I am no longer connected to them."
"But that doesn't mean they're dead right?" Edrick questioned.
"I don't know," Seraphine.
"Then what the fuck do you know?" Jarred exclaimed out of frustration, " Are they fucken alive or not, I swear to the deity you serve that I will blow your brains myself if you say, 'I don't know' one more time." He glared at her with his gun raised.
Seraphine's eyes glowed a violet hue and in just a span of a second, Jarred dropped to the floor. Katerina ran towards him, "What did you do?"
Seraphine huffed, "he needed to relax,"
"So you knock him out?!" Katerina shrieked.
"He needed to REALLY relax," she emphasised.
"Look, I am also worried about them as much as you guys, they were as much my family as they were yours, so don't you dare treat me as if I don't have feelings. I don't know what's going on but they hose that, and quite frankly they know I never have a word in their idiocy but they saved us so please save me the antics and the bloody questions because I DON'T ALWAYS HAVE ANSWERS!" Seraphine vented, tears streaming down her face as she huffed and gripped tightly to her jeans, "I don't know," she whispered.
She fell to her knees, muffling her cries, no one running to console her as their feelings of loss grew every second her cries filled the space. Dria dug her face into Price trying desperately not to let the tears fall.
"What happens now?" Edrick asked, his question hanging in the air before being carried by the wind for no one knew the answer.
