______________________________TWO DAYS LATER
Y/N's POV:
*RING RING RING*
Ohhh man, it's that time. The time to get ready for school in the morning for the eleventh year in a row.
I groaned because I didn't want to get up for school. I also stayed up too late last night. I have a friend named Caleb(not sandwich bag Caleb, a different one) and a friend named Kris.
They told me to start playing online games with them because they said that they "need teammates." I agreed and they've been making me play this game called Rainbow Six Siege. It's pretty fun, but I suck at that game.
I know all first person shooters are different and all, but Siege is REALLY different than the other ones.
We stayed up until we started hearing birds. We realized we fucked up.
I opened my eyes and rubbed them. Consider this a lesson learned: don't stay up all night playing video games on a school night.
I only got an hour of sleep. I'm definitely and accidentally taking a power nap in one of my classes, guaranteed.
I also realized that I have work this afternoon, my day's starting off great.
I shut off my alarm and got out of bed, getting a good stretch afterwards. Now dressed, I left my room to go right to the kitchen. My mom was out there, dad must be in bed still.
"Good morning honey-"
"Ooo, is that coffee?"
I grabbed a mug and quickly poured coffee into it. My mom looked at me like I was the strangest thing she's ever seen.
"I thought you didn't like coffee"
"No I love coffee"
I took a sip and felt the blazing liquid spread everywhere in my mouth. It also tasted like shit.
I got it down and I gagged.
"Why's it taste like that?"
"You didn't even put anything in it"
I plugged my nose and I gulped the mug down. Hopefully, that'll get me through school.
"Why are drinking coffee all of a sudden?"
"I just got bad sleep, so I'm trying to keep myself awake"
I washed the mug in the sink and put it down with the other clean dishes on the counter.
"Excited for your first day of school?"
I shrugged my shoulders.
"This one isn't gonna be any different than the others"
"True, but you're way closer to graduating than last year!" She playfully said.
I chuckled.
"Maybe you'll find a girlfriend this year"
"Mmm. I don't know, mom. Ever since the whole Amanda thing happened, I've been pretty happy just doing my own thing"
"You never know if you might change. You might find a girl who'll treat you way better than she did"
I guess that is true, but do I wanna risk it? I've said that I wanted to be alone for a while, but that blonde haired girl I saw yesterday kinda changed my prospective. I feel like a weirdo saying that a complete stranger changed my mind. Is that normal?
"I don't know"
That's all I said and I made a bowl of cereal.
After getting ready for the day, I made my way outside to leave. The fresh and stinky ocean air hit me right in the face as soon as I stepped foot on my walkway. Yep, smells like home.
Then, I got in my car and drove to school. This drive is boring because it's just a simple and little road, it's also not close to the ocean. It only looks good in the fall when the foliage kicks in.
Once I got to a certain part of the road, I saw the big brick building. Saco High School.
I found a parking spot and I got out of my car to walk into school. My first class was botany and zoology.
Knowing Mr. Bailey, he's gonna throw us right into school work. But in this case, an animal. I walked in and I found my seat, waiting for my class to start.
After waiting for a few minutes, more kids came in. Two guys named Dustin and Asher walked into the class, laughing hysterically about something. Most people think they're really cool, but they're actually annoying and to be honest, one of the rudest duos I've ever met. The both of them are hicks who are obsessed with sports. They say that they're good, but they actually suck ass.
Also, remember that girl I saw yesterday that I thought was gorgeous? Well what just happened just blew my mind and made me excited on the inside. She just walked into my class. What a coincidence! I guess it really is a small world after all.
She walked to a table in front of me. But before she did that, she saw me and I think I saw her eyes widen a little, like if she wasn't expecting me to be here. We exchanged little smiles yesterday, but today was different. Our smiles we exchanged today were brighter. I think it's because we knew each other as the boy and girl that walked past each other in a restaurant.
She turned around and sat down in her chair after that. I felt pretty good that she's here to be honest.
I think I got a chance.
The first part of class wasn't terrible. Mr. Bailey gave us all crawfish to research about. What he told us is that we have to learn every part of the animal for a different section. What I mean is that we have to learn about the external and internal organs, but also talk about its lifecycle and what the organs do.
Everything was quiet. Maybe I can-
"Y/N, you should lick the crawfish's asshole"
Never mind.
I looked up to see Dustin and Asher laughing.
"I'm all set"
"Damnit dude, he's all set" Asher said, pretending to be upset.
"You wanna be a man? Lick it, I'd do it for free"
I looked up to see the girl in front of me looking at them. Her hair was tucked behind her ear, so I could see the disgusted expression on her face once he said that. Understandable.
"Alright Asher, lemme give you a rundown. We got the green gland right here. It acts as a kidney where it flushes blood out with pee, which Y/N has, because he's gay"
Ohhhh boy, they didn't change one bit.
Him and Asher were laughing so hard when really, it was getting annoying.
The class didn't laugh.
"Then we have the testes right here. They hold sperm, which Dustin wants in his mouth because he's gay"
The girl in front of me said all of a sudden. I wasn't expecting that and neither were they. The class heard and they started laughing.
"Then we have the gonopods right here, which is the male reproductive organ, which Dustin wants in his butt, because he's gay"
The class laughed again and I couldn't help but chuckle this time. It made me happy that she stuck up for me.
Dustin scoffed and went back to work. Those two stayed quiet.
The girl looked back at me and we smiled at each other.
"That was hilarious. Thank you for that" I whispered.
"Of course. Mind if I sit with you, Y/N?"
"No, not at all"
She got up and collected her crawfish and sat down next to me.
"What's your name?"
"My name's Gwen"
Okay, so Ned was right about that. Cool.
"And believe me, I'm not homophobic" She jokingly clarified.
I laughed and she blushed.
"I don't know, I think you're making him question life over there" I whispered.
She lightly giggled.
Her and I talked way more and got to know each other. She told me that she did in fact come from New York City. She's sixteen years old, she was in a band called the Mary Janes before she moved, her dad was a cop in the city and is the new chief of police for the whole county. She really likes to play the drums, that's what she played in the band.
"You should join the school's band club, they need a drummer"
She shrugged her shoulders.
"I don't know. I've been liking to play on my own recently"
"That's fair. But I was also just letting you know"
We smiled at each other and then back at our crawfish.
"How do you put up with them?"
She was asking about Asher and Dustin. I shrugged my shoulders.
"I just do"
She smiled.
"Again, thanks for what you did"
"Of course. Also, they were being fucking gross"
I laughed.
We continued to talk more until class was over. She wasn't given a schedule, so I had to help her find her class. We said bye and parted ways. She was actually a really nice and was hilarious, I wonder what other classes she has.
Later on in the day came my last class of my first semester. P.E. I've always been good at physical stuff, mainly soccer. I'm playing again this year and I'll hopefully make a lot of goals, I killed it last year.
I walked out of the locker room and into the gym, they're attached. Eventually, more people were coming out to the gymnasium. Then there was this one girl that came out, Gwen.
We gave each other a surprised smile because we had no idea we were in the same class. I got up off the floor and walked over to her.
"Hey!" We said at the same time.
She has such a pretty smile, I also really like the gap in her teeth.
"Ready to get your ass kicked today?"
I looked at her, playfully stunned.
"Woahhh! Is that trash talk from Gwen?"
She giggled.
Mrs. Ricks came out and just went over class expectations and stuff, blah blah blah. We weren't really gonna do anything special, so she just had us play dodgeball.
Now, I'm pretty sure everyone has played dodgeball at least once. If you're one of those sad fucks that haven't, let me explain something that's pretty scary about the game.
PEOPLE HAVE A FUCKING CANNON FOR AN ARM!
Dudes will throw the balls as hard as they can, which it's always going in the opposite direction, and the ball hitting the wall sounds like a gunshot. I've caught a few of those balls and depending on the person, they can sometimes knock the wind out of you.
Gwen and I tried to get on the same team, but the coach randomly picked us out. As you would expect, we didn't get on the same team.
It was seven against seven and we all stood at the end of the gymnasium after we settled the game up.
The teacher blew the whistle and we all sprinted as fast as we could to the middle of the room. I managed to grab a ball and I quickly backed up.
Scanning the room, it looks like Gwen has a ball in her hand.
She wasn't looking at me, so I took the shot and I threw the ball at her. It was flying straight at her, until she dodged it.
The funny thing about that, I mean not funny, kinda odd I guess, is that she wasn't looking in my direction and she STILL DODGED MY BALL! She must see the future or something, I can't explain how she did that.
Someone else threw a ball at her and she smacked it away with the ball in her hand. Then, she looked at me.
I was basically a deer in headlights now, I had no ball.
She turned and threw the ball right at me. But as she was doing that, I dropped to the floor as fast as I could. The ball zoomed over my head and it hit the wall. I don't think I've ever heard a dodgeball hit a wall so hard in my life, it was like a shotgun went off in my ear.
"Roids! Roids!" a kid on my team was saying.
He was pointing at Gwen and kept saying that. Until he got pelted in the face.
If you didn't understand what he was saying, he was basically accusing her of having performance enhancing drugs in her system... I'm kinda starting to believe him.
I looked at the wall and back at Gwen in complete shock. She was just laughing.
"How the fuck did you do that?"
"If I tell you, that'll make you good at the game"
"Oh it's on!"
I got up and grabbed two balls, ready to get back into action.
I chucked one of my balls at Gwen, but she dodged out of the way. The ball flew past her and hit another girl in the face. Like, really hard.
"Ooo"
I winced in pity, feeling bad for what I did. But I can't focus on that, I have a game to win.
I chucked my other ball and she managed to catch it with one hand, like it was nothing. She got me out.
"Damn" I laughed.
She laughed with me and I walked to the wall and sat down.
Now I was cheering Gwen on, I didn't really care about my team that much.
"Get um, Gwen!"
Eventually, Gwen was the only one on her team against five. She's done for.
But somehow, she managed to dodge all their balls and she got them all out.
Her team cheered, including me, while the other team looked mad that they choked that badly.
I got up and walked over to Gwen, who was just given a high five.
"Yep, I think you're on the roids as well"
She playfully gasped.
"Am not!"
"Mhm. Sure, Liver Queen"
Her and I laughed really hard at that.
Later on, school came to an end. To be honest, pretty good first day if I do say so myself. My classes are good and somewhat easy, I got to see my friends and the best of all, I got to meet the cutest girl. Again.
I don't know why I feel like this about girls again. Ever since what Amanda did to me, I've refused to get a girlfriend ever since. Maybe I've healed.
There's just something about Gwen... I don't know what, but there is.
We exited the school together and she started walked towards a police car.
She opened the door and I think it was her dad in the car, this must be the new chief of police.
"Hey sweetheart"
He had a warm and welcoming smile.
"Hey"
She hopped in the car, putting her backpack on the floor.
"Who's this?"
"Oh dad, this is Y/N. He's in my botany/zoology class and P.E."
I gave a little smile.
"How you doing, officer?"
"Not too bad. You can call me George"
"You liking it here?"
"Yeah, I am. It's very different, I'll say that"
"Oh yeah, I bet"
We went back and forth for a few more seconds until Gwen and I said bye. Those two took off and I went back to my car.
What a great first day of school. Maybe I can make this work. Or, at least I hope I can.FOUR HOURS LATER
"How was your first day, bud?"
"Ehh, not too bad. I wanted to fucking kill myself because I had to sit in the way back and Alicia was making out with her boyfriend. Literally right next to me"
"Damn dude. You tell them to stop?" I asked while putting a whole package of canned corn on the shelf, one by one.
"I tried, but they told me to shut up and how I have a tiny penis, apparently"
Him and I started laughing.
I was working at my local grocery store with Ned. Market Basket.
If you don't know what that is, let me explain. It's a privately owned supermarket chain that only runs in the New England states: Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. It's actually a pretty good store too. It's also got a deli that is to die for.
We were working product onto the shelves since they had to go out. I've been working here since mid March and it's about to be September, almost six months.
I think the worst part about working here is that you have to wear these outfits to let everyone know that you work there. It's the bad kind of tuxedo, literally. You can either get a red coat or a blue coat, I have a red and Ned has a blue.
After him and I finished putting product on the shelves in aisle three, we went out back to get more product, this was for isle seven this time.
Ned had to use the restroom, so I went back out on the sales floor myself.
A few minutes later and as I was putting juice box packages on the shelves, I heard a familiar voice.
"Y/N?"
I looked to the side, it was Gwen.
I felt so happy once I saw her.
"Oh my god, hey!"
She walked up to me.
"Hey!"
She had a big smile on her face.
"Can't seem to get away from you"
"It's a small world, I guess"
We laughed.
"You work here?"
"Yeah, with my best friend. I've been here since March"
"Gotcha" she said, nodding her head.
"Here with your dad?"
"Yeah, we really needed to get groceries. We've just been getting delivered pizza from Saco house of Pizza"
"SHOP?"
I smiled and she chuckled.
"That's what you call it?"
"I mean yeah. If there's a town name pizza place, people will call it by the first letters"
"We didn't do that in New York"
"Oh your pizza must've slapped"
"Oh yeah it does, lemme take you down and I'll have you try some"
Wait, is she flirting?
"I'd be down"
She chuckled.
"Hey (last name), we helping customers or are we just talking?"
Shit, that's my boss. Gwen looked awkward about what was happening.
"Uh yeah-yeah, I'm working" I say as I put an eight pack of Hi-C orange in her hand.
My boss just walks away after that.
"Well then, I'll let you get back to work then"
"Oh yeah. Good to see you again"
"You two, Y/N. See you tomorrow"
She said waving and walked away with the juice boxes in put in her hands.
I chuckled.Gwen's POV:
I just finished talking to Y/N, he's great. He's so sweet and funny. I've never felt this way before with a boy. I can't wait to study with him tomorrow for our crawfish. Maybe even dart him in the face with another dodgeball.
I found dad at the produce section and I put the juice boxes in the cart.
He looked down to see what I put in.
"Really?"
He laughed.
"I don't know, Y/N gave them to me"
"Wait, he works here?"
Yeahhh, I kinda rambled to dad about him. He said that he seemed like a "nice guy," but I feel like he's more than that.
"Yeah he does"
He nodded.
Eventually, we called it good and we paid for our groceries.
We got back in our rental car and started making our way back home.
For the first time in a while, I had a smile on my face. And that was because of one boy.
