Carter's POV
Maya is running to their car in front of Riley and I. Spending the day with them at the park was so fun. I can't help but feel so much joy but that suddenly disappears when I remember how long I have left. I don't feel good. I think I might have played around too much.
"What are you overthinking about?" Riley asks.
"What do you think is awaiting us after death?" The question leaves my mouth before I can stop myself.
I feel her body tense next to me as we're walking, "Never mind I don't know why I asked that." I immediately say.
"I like to think it's peaceful." Riley quietly answers me.
"Peaceful." I repeat, "Peaceful for everyone or just me?" I look at her and her face is blank she's not showing any emotions.
She doesn't answer me anymore. She walks past me and goes to Maya.
"Ready to go home honey?" She asks and Maya nods her head tired.
"What time is it?" I ask Riley. She looks at her phone, "7:42"
"Can you take me to school? I dont have my car today since I'm grounded so I have to call my mom to pick me up.
"Do you just want me to take you home?" Riley asks?
Heck no. People already make fun of me for thinking we're rich I don't need her to think I'm a spoiled brat.
"No it's okay my mom said she would pick me up."
"Okay that sounds good." She opens the door for Maya and starts bucking her in.
I walk to the passenger side and open my door but suddenly my vision gets blurry. I blink and this pounding in my ear starts.
"Oh shit," I force the words out.
Riley turns her head and she gasps, "Carter your face is so white."
"I don't feel good." I tell her and suddenly lose my balance. She immediately reaches to me and catches me. I gasp for air feeling my heart beating rapidly against my chest.
"Carter what's happening?" She shakes my body. I try to talk but I start coughing. I can't catch my breath.
I can clearly see her talking to me but her voice starts to disappear and I can feel my eyes closing.
The last thing I remember was the sounds of Maya's cry's.
...
"You were supposed to watch her." I hear Mom raise her voice at Mama.
"Beautiful, I was at work."
"She almost died Megan." A sob breaks out of her.
So dramatic.
I open my eyes slowly and the bright light makes me close them right away, "Can you guys stop yelling it's hurting my ears."
I fully open my eyes and Mom looks like a mess. Her eyes are puffy and red which makes it so obvious she's been crying.
