"Why?"
—"Mama, are you riding with grandma?" I ask as she finishes putting Riley in a little suit and bow tie for the festival. He grins and laughs at something she says to him, coaxing a smile from me. Despite expecting him to dress up for Halloween, Riley insisted he wanted to match Creed, which we thought was so cute. I convinced him to at least put some makeup on and made him look similar to a Calacalvera from the movie Coco.
Before leaving, Mama nods and nudges Riley towards Abuela. She briefly laid her hand on my shoulder and smiled at me. I noticed how her purple witch costume brought out the new caramel color in her hair.
"I'm going to take her to her stand. I'm sure it's lovely," she said.
I nod in agreement, lifting the large tray of lavender cookies. "Creed showed me the other day. It's stunning."
A honk sounded from outside, indicating Creed's arrival. I carefully held the tray and walked towards the car. Creed came over and instantly helped me, noticing my slight struggle. He whispered on the shell of my ear, "The circles under your eyes are worrying me, love," while taking the heavy tray.
I rolled my eyes and replied, "I'm fine. I was honestly too excited about the festival to sleep."
After kissing the side of my head, he opened the door for me and Riley and greeted him by saying, "Sup, lil man."
Riley grins up at Creed. "I wanted to be like you."
Creed wore a similar crisp tux and tie; a red handkerchief sat in the pocket.
Fuck he looked so good. Even with all his tattoos covered, I couldn't help but eye him down.
He chuckled and helped Riley into the car before turning to me and said, 'Like me, huh? I don't think that's such a good idea."
I shrugged and played with his tie, 'It's going to be fun for him. For us."
Suddenly, Creed's eyes narrowed, and a warm feeling washed over me, causing me to pause. He pressed a firm hand against the small of my back, squeezing the flesh of my hip.
The ride into town didn't take long, and on our way, Riley expressed his excitement, demanding that we try every food there is to try.
Creed mentioned that he had to give a speech in town at six o'clock, and it was apparent that he wasn't thrilled about it. As we watched Riley play some games, I offered encouragement, "You'll do great, baby. Just keep it short and sweet, and I'm sure all the elderly folks will appreciate it." It's a perk of being considered part of the mayor's family that Riley enjoys the unlimited game time.
A sudden heat rushes over my skin as I feel Creed's finger play with the corset of my costume suggestively. Trying to ignore his touches, I take a bite of hot chili.
