aurora had been picked up by derek and scott to go to their old house. derek had told her the alpha had killed someone in a video store but had left jackson whittmore alive.

they soon arrived at their house, and as usual, scott was complaining. "you know, i have a life." he told derek as he walked into the house.

"no, you don't." derek simply said, walking up the stairs.

"yes, i do!" scott yelled, making aurora let out a small laugh. "i don't care what you say about him making me his pet or-"

"part of his pack." aurora added.

scott turned to aurora. "whatever." he looked back at derek. "i have homework to do."

derek sent aurora a look, reminding her she also had homework to do.

"i have to go to a parent/teacher conference tomorrow. because i'm failing chemistry." scott flew his arms in the air.

derek sent aurora another look, she never told him about the parent/teacher conference. the girl pursed her lips and sent him a sweet smile, derek just shook his head.

"you wanna do homework? or do you not wanna die?" derek questioned the boy, scott let out a sigh. "you have less than a week until the full moon. you don't kill with him, he kills you."

"okay, seriously, who made up these rules?"

"it's a rite of passage into his pack." aurora told scott, glancing down at her nails with a frown.

"you know what else is a rite of passage?" scott asked. "graduating from high school! and you don't have to kill anyone to do it! why can't you just find him yourself? why can't you just sniff him out when he's human."

"because his human scent could be entirely different." derek replied like scott was dumb. "it has to be you. you have a connection with him, a link that you can't understand. if i can teach you to control your abilities, you can find him."

scott was silent for a moment. "so if i help you, you can stop him?"

"not alone. we're stronger in numbers." derek glanced at aurora, who was bored out of her mind. "a pack makes the individual more powerful."

"how am i supposed to help if i have no idea what i'm doing?"

"because we're gonna teach you, scott! oh my, god." aurora said in annoyance.

"do you remember what happened that first night you were shot in the arm?" derek asked. "right after you were hit?"

"i changed back." scott said quietly.

"mm-hm. and when you were hit by his car, same thing, right?" scott nodded. "what's the common denominator?"

scott didn't say anything and derek reached for his hand squeezing it tightly, making scott groan in pain.

"der..." aurora warned.

scott went to the ground and derek didn't let go of his hand. "what is... what the hell are you doing!?"

"you'll heal." derek said as he let go of scott's hand.

"it still hurts!" scott seethed.
