I let my fingers jump tremblingly over the piano keys. Not a single note sounded bright, but only the left side of the row of keys felt my fingertips. One dark chord was followed by another. The pace slowed down towards the end, as if I were putting on a brake. I finished playing when I heard Charles coming into the room. He was buttoning up his white shirt and adjusting his sleeves to his wrists. "What are you playing?" he asked, coming up to me.
"Oh nothing. Are you ready?", I got up evasively and looked at him. In a suit, he definitely had a lot about him as well.
"Yes, you too?" I nodded affirmatively and reached for my coat and cap. Charles put on his black jacket, then it started. We drove his Ferrari to my parents' house. Luckily, there was a free parking space right in front of it. After I rang the doorbell, it took less than ten seconds for my mom to appear in the doorway and greet us overjoyed. Yep, now she knows that Charles is my boyfriend. She warmly invited us in. We left our shoes in the entrance area and followed her into the dining room. Pascale, Arthur and my father were already sitting around the table and greeted us warmly. Charles pulled back a chair for me, on which I sat down gratefully. He took a seat right next to me. A little later, my mother joined me and put her cooked dinner on the table. After a quick toast with a glass of sparkling wine, everyone loaded their plate with the steaming food.
„How nice that we are all finally together again," Pascale remarked and smiled to the group. "You can say that out loud," my mom agreed with her with conviction and beamed as well. For the next two hours, we talked about all sorts of things. For example, Charles and I talked about our vacation in Norway.
My heart contracted painfully when it was time to say goodbye. I knew that today would be different than usual. Even though I was the only one who knew. I hugged my mother tightly. She taught me so much in this life. She always wanted the best for me and my siblings, stood up for us and showed me how to get along in this world. Even if that doesn't matter anymore. I failed and disappointed them.
I pressed a kiss to her cheek and had to control myself not to cry. She pushed me away from her skeptically. "Are you all right, Mouse?" I nodded hastily. "Sure, I'm just so grateful to you for everything," I explained myself and put on a smile. She smiled touched and stroked my cheek. If she only knew how much this gesture moved me. After that, I hugged my father tightly and kissed him on the cheek as well.
My heart broke as I waved to them, and the door slammed shut behind me. Charles drove me home when it was time to say "bye" here as well. He must catch the plane to France tonight because the race weekend is coming up there. I'm scheduled for the weekend, at least officially.
The Monegasque got out with me and escorted me to the door. With every step, my heart seemed to crack more and more. Then we faced each other, and I looked into his bright green eyes. They always captivated me and gave me the peace that I couldn't find anywhere else. How much I will miss them, but it will be better this way.
All of a sudden, I couldn't hold back my tears anymore. They ran down my face in warm drops and seeped into my sweater. Charles wiped one of the countless tears from my face, confused. "Hey, what's wrong?" he asked worriedly. I tried to laugh or at least smile. "I'm just so grateful to you for everything. That's all," I assured him in a shaky voice. He pulled me into his arms, his unmistakable scent filling my lungs. I absorbed the feeling of his existence, as if I could keep it to myself, even if logically this is not possible. "Hey, we'll see you again on Monday. Then we'll go for a nice walk, or we'll spend the day on my yacht," Charles suggested excitedly. I nodded in agreement. Inwardly, however, I knew that none of these things would happen, and this fact tore my heart out of my chest.
He took my face in his hands and smiled encouragingly. "Take care. I love you," he whispered softly to me. "I love you too," he kissed me tenderly first on the forehead and then on the lips. Without hesitation, I returned the kiss. I didn't want to let him go, but it was finally time to let him go. I smiled painfully after him as he got into his car and started the engine. Before leaving, he blew me an imaginary kiss. I did the same back and immediately felt tears burning in my eyes again. I waved as his tires spun and he steered the car out of the driveway and onto the road. I stood still until he was gone. The cold of the approaching night enveloped me. Maybe it was my heart that turned the blood in my veins to ice. It hurt with loneliness.
Soon I turned my back on the outside world and went into the house. Today I decide about life and death, about curse and hope and peace and war. The time has come when I put things in order and let my inner voice take over. She has never disappointed me and was always right...
