The polished wooden floor creaked beneath the weight of hurried footsteps, creating a ruffling sound that echoed through the dimly lit hallway. The old lady, who's face weathered by time and adorned with a myriad of wrinkles, sat at the table, her lips curved into a sinister smirk as she heard the approaching noise. With each step drawing closer, the anticipation painted her expression with a mix of excitement and malice.
Meanwhile, a spoon laden with clear soup hovered near her lips, its contents trembling slightly as she awaited the inevitable intrusion. Despite the interruption, she continued to sip the liquid with a deliberate lack of concern for the impending visitor.
As the footsteps grew nearer, their speed and intensity conveyed a sense of urgency and anger that resonated with the old woman. With a graceful motion, she placed the spoon delicately back into the bowl and dabbed at her lips with a napkin, maintaining an air of composure amidst the mounting tension.
Seated at the table, she rested her wrists on the edge, her closed eyes betraying the inner turmoil beneath the facade of patience. The rhythmic circling of her thumbs around her fingers hinted at her impatience, as if she were mentally counting down the moments until the arrival of the intruder.
The door creaked open with a hint of carelessness. Despite this, the old lady remained composed, her attention drawn to the familiar voice that pierced the silence of her room.
"Halmeoni!"
Her eyes fluttered open at the sound, and she reached out to press the button on her wheelchair, rotating it slowly to face the doorway where her grandson stood.
"Jungkook, I hope everything has been taken care of nicely in Russia," her words gently prodded Jungkook forward. He approached his grandma, head slightly bowed in respect.
"Greetings halmeoni, yes I proposed them to come to Korea for further paperwork. I couldn't risk falling into their trap after signing all the documents," Jungkook explained, his face betraying no emotion.
"Hmmm... that would be good, but it would be even better if you didn't behave like a coward and sign those papers right there. We've already spent our hard-earned money on those useless people," her words cut through Jungkook like sharp blades, leaving him feeling emotionally drained. Each encounter with his halmeoni served as a painful reminder that relationships often come with strings attached, where sacrifices are held over your head, leaving you feeling insignificant and unappreciated all the time.
For Jungkook, love relationships felt like burdensome weights he had to carry throughout his life.
Standing quietly, Jungkook offered no response to his grandma's words, leaving her to gaze at him with disbelief etched on her face.
Shaking her head, she began to remind Jungkook of the sacrifices she had made for him, like every time.
"I lost my legs while trying to save you from that attack. It not only took my legs but also my husband–my mate, and my son. Your treacherous excuse for a mother betrayed us all. Despite my pain, I cared for you, raised you, and prepared you to manage this vast empire. And yet, you stand here with nothing to say," she sneered, shaking her head once more.
Jungkook stood motionless, his posture resembling that of a stoic statue, devoid of any hint of interest. His response came in a monotone, as if it were a pre-programmed script ingrained in his mind, destined to be regurgitated whenever his halmeoni brought up past occurrences.
"Yes, halmeoni, I will be more cautious in the future," Jungkook uttered mechanically, his voice lacking emotion, as though his words were merely an automated response to her reminders.
