Dylan Marci was ten. She was young, smart, and dyslexic. Her brown curls bounced on her shoulders as she shoved people out of the way. That thing was after her. Turning her head around, the thing with dragon-like wings and a burnish body slowly inched through the crowd. People were stupid, Dylan thought to herself, they didn't see the monster. It was right there, but without Dylan's knowledge, all they saw was a kind old woman carrying a knitting set. A harmless woman. Dylan jerked her head back around and continued to run. There was nothing she could use to protect herself. Running across the street, Dylan slid in and out of people. She was small for her age, but she did not care.
"Dylan, sugar. Come with me. I know someone who would like to meet you," the monster sneered with a sound of sweetness along with her tone.
Dylan Marci was pretty much homeless. Her family had abandoned her due to her dyslexia disorder. She was too expensive of a burden on her family and her family dumped her on the streets. She had seen things and getting a therapist was too much for her parents to bear. But this thing that she saw was real. It was real to her. Because in her world, it was real.
"Dylan!"
Dylan sprinted through the crowd, turning her head back, only to trip and crash to the ground. She scrambled to her elbows and stayed on the ground out of fear. The monster inched closer to her and no one and no one helped her off the sidewalk. At least a hundred people were walking right past Dylan but she stayed right in the ground.
"Well, hello Dylan," the monster smiled, her wings covering her body as she passed through the crowd, toward Dylan. She gently passed through people, without them noticing. She smiled as the distance between her and Dylan was shrinking.
"Help..." was all Dylan could utter. Except no one could hear her. No one ever did.
"No one is coming to help you. You're alone child,"
The monster raised her wings and started laughing. Dylan felt every inch of confidence leave her body. She couldn't move. She was stuck. This was her end. From an old lady with a knitting set. She lifted her arm to cover her head from the impact of the monster's wings.
She waited. She waited for what felt like hours. And n9othing. There was no contact. No pain searing through her veins. She shakily removed her arm from her view to see a tall curly black-haired boy standing above her, holding what looked to be a sword. However, to a passerby, it was a small umbrella. The boy's shoulders were in tune with his breathing before he turned around.
He looked down at Dylan, who in pure fear kicked him in the leg. He grunted as she scrambled to her feet and started running. Running away from the monster and the boy. She didn't make it far because the boy grabbed her wrist and dragged her into the nearby alley.
She started pulling back from him, but he shoved her against the alley wall, the side of the sword inches from her throat and his other hand clamped over her mouth. He stared out of the alley, and they stood there like that for a couple of minutes. Believing it was safe, he dropped the sword he took a step back from Dylan and she observed him. "Are you kidnapping me?" was her first question. As it should be. Guy that good-looking might be trying to kidnap a girl like her.
He just laughed. A good laugh too. "No, no, no, no, Dylan. I'm here to help. That thing after you was going to kill you,"
"So you saw it? Like everyone else!" Dylan started to panic. She started to hyperventilate and put her head against the wall. Staring at the sky, before returning her gaze to the boy.
"Right now, only you and me can see it,"
"Is it going to come after us?"
"No."
