"Oh, shit. It's my mum." Jess says just before the door unlocks and whirls open.

"Jessica Hannah Glynne, what do you think you're doing with this young lady?" she gestures at you.

"W-we're just friends, mum." Jess fidgets on the bed.

"Then why are you locked up in your bedroom with her?"

"Um...We were talking...?"

"I read the news, Jessica. You're in a relationship, isn't that right?"

"Well...yes," Jess admits.

"Well, in that case, I want you to get out of this relationship of yours. Your father and I do not approve at all."

"And why's that? Is it because I'm a woman, not a man?" you snap.

"Well...no, but-"

"And you cannot be telling her what to do anymore. She's an adult, not a teenager." you cut her off.

"You'd better lose that attitude, young lady." she takes a step towards you.

"Yeah? Well, what're you gonna do about it, huh?"

"Young lady, I swear-"

"Both of you stop!" Jess shouts suddenly, making you jump.

She takes a deep breath, and continues, "Mum, my love life is none of your business. I'm an adult with a career, and you have no right telling me what to do. Y/n, lose that attitude right now, or else...well, we both know what'll happen."

"Jessica, if you think that just because you don't live under my roof anymore, you can ignore me, you're terribly mistaken." Jess's mum puts her hands on her hips.

"Please get out of my house, mum." Jess sighs.

"But, Jessica-"

"Now. Or I'm calling the cops."

Jess waits until her mum leaves the room, and then she closes and locks the door. You sit together on the bed, listening as her mum closes the front door, starts her car, and pulls out of the driveway.

"That was a little harsh." you shift closer to her.

"I'm just tired of her controlling my life. But you're right; I should apologize."

"Wait for her to cool down a bit. Maybe something's going on in her life and she wanted to see if you were ok."

"Now you're making me feel guilty. I shouldn't have pushed her away."

You pat her leg, "It was just a touchy subject. Look, I'll leave you to yourself for a bit. If you need me, I'll be right across the hall."

As you turn to leave, Jess says, "Wait. Can you...can you stay with me? Please?"

"Sure." You climb onto the bed and sit next to her, legs crossed.

"I know this is complicated, and I know my mum doesn't like it..." Jess rolles the sheets between her fingers.

"But...?..."

"But I love you. I love you so much. I don't know what I'd do without you"

"Me too. You make me feel whole again. After...after..."

"Yeah, I get it. But don't waste your tears on guys who don't deserve shit from you."

"Mhm." you blink fast, fighting back both tears and bad memories.

"Smoking doesn't tire me but with you it really hits me. Something must be wrong with me." Jess sings softly.

"Never let a word slip 'cause I know you really want it. I'm confident in what I see." You tug at her clothes.
