"While My Lord may not have been able to finish his education as a youth, he still made an effort to continue studying and increasing his literacy and writing abilities. To him, it was the only practice left to keep him sane."
DEMONIC SUBBORDINATE HAI RUAN
MEMENTO MORI
Xun Jie awoke on the couch again. Alone, just as he had for the past few days. He moved under the blanket in hopes of getting in another position comfortable enough to fall asleep in, but with everything that happened the night before, he could not possibly get any more shuteye than he had been so lucky to already.
Upon moving around even more, he heard something like paper crumpling under the blanket. He quickly sat up and searched for the source of the noise, throwing the blanket up and seeing a paper and comb go flying as he lifted it too fast. Xun Jie got up and picked up the comb before he uncrumpled the paper, reading what was written on it.
Xun Jie,
I'll be out for a few hours, but I promise I'll be back in time to make lunch. If you ever get hungry, please feel free to eat any of the snacks I have.
Sincerely, Wen Jingyi
As soon as he finished, he set the paper on the coffee table and began running the comb through his hair. He was quick to discover that it did not feel the same when someone else combed his hair for him.
Xun Jie realized that he had set the wrinkled paper next to a clean, flat one with more writing that was tucked under a large glass teapot filled with a fragrant liquid that could only be assumed to be a fruity tea.
I hope the teapot caught your attention; another note began.
I made a cup for me to clean myself up this morning, but decided I may as well make a pot for you just in case you wanted some. Don't worry, for I've already added a good amount of sugar to the pot.
Please be sure to tend to your needs of hunger and hydration while I'm out. Now, as for if you ever get bored...I've left a notebook next to the teapot in case you want to write or draw anything on your mind. It helps me get things off my mind, so I thought that it may help you as well. There are more books on the bookshelf in case you want to keep reading. It is quite a great pastime.
I'll be back. I promise.
Something about the closing sentence made Xun Jie worried that Wen Jingyi had doubted him. Doubted whether he genuinely wanted to stay in this world and share his apartment with him. This made Xun Jie's heart shrink for him as he wondered who could have forced the poor man to be so untrusting of the people around him.
He poured himself a glass of tea as he looked around for the journal that was mentioned in the note. He eventually realized it was on the other side of the teapot, its cover causing it to blend in with the white table.
Xun Jie flipped it open and was immediately bombarded by the paper-ripped sketches of people and animals on the first page.
There was a title on that rough first page.
YEAR 1 VENT JOURNAL.
Wen Jingyi did not appreciate the nostalgia of an old college classroom. Half of the people in the room were ones he already knew from the past couple of years. He was only in this room again since he wanted to perfect his literary and writing skills for obvious reasons.
However, some people in the room truly made him want to drop the class. Those people were the same ones whom he turned into dead ones in Memento Mori.
