"My Lord shares his thoughts with whoever he so pleases. Now living the life of a half-blooded demon, what else would he need to worry about sharing? In the worst-case scenario, his audience may hate him even more. For him to be careful of speaking around anyone truly shows how important he sees his image upon another soul."
DEMONIC SUBORDINATE HAI RUAN
MEMENTO MORI
Xun Jie had been sobbing in the array for a week, crying out his apologies while Wen Jingyi had no way to respond or ensure that he was even listening. The only way to do so would be if he had a constant flow of spiritual energy to use the telepathic array or had someone to accompany him and tie his conscience to their own.
But the only way to do that would be with direct contact with said source of energy. That was currently impossible, as the cellar he found himself in had walls solid and thick, meant to prevent such a thing among its captives.
It was just lovely how Hai Ruan had their cell right next to Wen Jingyi's. He only discovered this after he found a small peeping hole in the walls meant for prisoners to be able to converse better. It was a detail he included to prevent sanity rates from dropping among those demons who were captured. The higher the sanity, the lower the chances of them self-detonating with their demonic qi and making a crater in the world. As fun as it would be to write, it would have ended the main storyline much more abruptly than desired.
The hole in the wall was only a few centimeters wide in diameter. It was wide enough for two eyes to peek through, but not tall enough for an arm to slip through. A finger may have been able to, but the walls were too thick for fingers in two different cells to touch.
"Hai Ruan? When did you get here? How?"
They were quick to move closer to the peeping hole, both looking straight at one another.
"They caught me not too long after we parted ways at the river."
"Back at the river? Really? Then what took you so long to get here? Did they make you walk here?"
"Mn."
As they spoke another minute, Wen Jingyi's hair continued to fall over his face, obstructing his vision and making his face feel rather itchy.
"Are your hands bound with immortal binding cables?"
Hai Ruan shook their head. "I've come here of my own free will, looking to keep my lord's... friend safe."
They spoke strangely, but Wen Jingyi didn't question it.
"Could you revert my appearance? I can't concentrate when there's hair everywhere."
"Then cut it off."
"With what?"
"Wait a week and you may have nails long enough to cut it clean."
Wen Jingyi groaned. "If my nails ever grow that long, I will consider killing myself before worrying about my hair."
"Fine."
Not only did Wen Jingyi feel his head grow lighter, but he could also feel his face growing itchy and uncomfortable as it contorted and shifted back to normal. A shiver ran down his spine as he felt other parts of his body had changed, too.
"Why did you even give me long hair in the first place? And why do I feel bigger?"
Both were silent for a moment before Hai Ruan sighed.
"I thought you knew that my lord likes women. I thought that by changing some of your features to be slightly feminine it may increase your chances of getting with my lord."
