Kara Y/n was bullied all her life and it was all because she barely spoke. She could speak, but she preferred not to which caused her to often stutter over her words. Her family got worried for her so when she was a child they sent her to the doctors and the doctors revealed that she was mute by choice. She was often picked on because of her lack of skill in such a basic thing, so instead of hanging around people she would often be found alone usually with a book in her hands to be silent without a reason to give others verbally.
Today she was found in the school's backyard. The backyard was very spacious and it had a huge old tree in the middle, so Y/n with a book in her hands made her way to the tree to continue her previous reading.
"Hey! Mumble freak!" an all too familiar voice chirped into the silent atmosphere and broke Y/n's silence, she almost rolled her eyes at the voice. She looked up and saw the guy that has been disturbing her ever since she stepped foot in this school walking up to her. "Do you really do anything but read?" he asked as he grabbed the book Y/n was holding and held it above her "You're so lame!" he laughed as he watched Y/n make an attempt to grab it, he held it high above her reach and then held it highly behind him. Y/n stopped her jumping as she silently admitted that she couldn't reach it, and mentally cursed the world for her short height. "What? You realise you can't get it back, you short ass?" he chuckled as he brought the book to a normal height and started to flip through the pages "If you want it back, all you have to do is ask." he smirked knowing damn well that she wouldn't, he didn't understand how someone of his age couldn't even master such a simple living skill like talking.
It annoyed him so much that he was passing that annoyance to Y/n back, the cause of his annoyance. But, just in a worse way. He found it ridiculous that she would refuse to even utter a single word to anyone. Seeing her stand silently as he flipped through every page of the book drew more annoyance to stir up in his head. "You're not going to fucking talk?" he asked, anger leaking from his words and voice as he stopped flipping the pages. "Of course, you fucking aren't, you mute bitch." he gave her a slap to the face and then grabbed her hand to the fountain. Not many students were around the fountain but Y/n did catch a glimpse of a group in the distance. She tried to pull her wrist back afraid of what he'd do to her but his grip on her was firm and tight. The grip on her wrist pained her enough that she was convinced that her wrist would end up bruised up, "You going to fucking talk now?!" he asked as he held the book above the water in the fountain.
Y/n shook her head and pressed her palms against each other in a begging manner, you could almost hear the words of pleading in the air even if she hadn't opened her mouth. "Or so now you're just going to beg?! How fucking pathetic are you?" he yelled catching the eyes of a few students "Hey what the fuck are you doing?!" a male voice called out soon the book was snatched away and was in the hands of another male but this guy wasn't holding it for the same reason. "You better get away from her or else things aren't going to look good." the guy crossed his arms showing off his huge biceps 'Is this guy really a student here?' Y/n thought as she admired the braveness of the boy. "Whatever..." the guy that had been ruining Y/n's peace finally muttered and left with his hands in his pockets. "I can't believe such an asshole would do that to you." the guy said angrily as he let his arms fall "Here you go," he said with a smile so kind Y/n was sure that she hasn't seen a smile like it for years. She took the book and bowed her head at the stranger "I'm Changbin and you?" he asked with a bright smile, Y/n took out her phone opened her Notepad and typed in her name soon showing it to Changbin.
Nice to meet you Changbin, I'm Y/n!
Changbin read the name and smiled 'Her name and herself are so pretty!' he thought to himself "Your name is really pretty! How can someone like him do something so cruel to such a pretty girl like you?" he asked testing out his smile full of charm. Y/n blushed at his comment since it wasn't often that she was called pretty she then started to type something trying to hide her face full of blush but Changbin had already taken a mental image of her flustered face and now his heart was doing flips.
He was bothering me because I'm selectively mute.
Changbin read the words on her phone and was saddened that people were so cruel that they had treated her like shit all because of her disadvantage at talking. "I'm guessing that you don't have many friends because of that?" he asked, his voice was full of worry and Y/n could feel it. She had seen someone be sad for her, she nodded to Changbin's question. A moment of silence filled the area, Y/n could see that he was thinking of something and she wondered what. Her thoughts were filled with clouds telling her that she had fucked up her only chance of gaining a potential friend "Do you know sign language?" he asked suddenly breaking the silent atmosphere. Y/n kept away her phone and signed a "Y-E-S." to Changin "I don't know much about sign language but I do know that means 'yes', right?" he asked as a confirmation which Y/n nodded happily. "I'm glad that I got that right, if I hadn't then I would have been embarrassed by now." he chuckled which made the girl let out a soft chuckle, it was soft but it was loud enough for the two of them to hear. Changbin smiled seeing that he was able to get Y/n to let out a chuckle even if it was a small one.

It was the next day at school and Jisung, Chan, and Changbin were walking down the halls together. Changbin was telling his best friends what had happened the other day and he was proud to say that he had gotten Y/n's number. Jisung can't help but feel like he was familiar with the said girl, Changbin didn't give a name to them but the way he described her was oddly familiar.
"Oh yeah, I have to head to the library." Changbin suddenly announced as soon as he finished his talk about yesterday "Well, then let's go." Chan said smiling at the idea and the fact that his best friend had found someone to like "Noooo the last time we went there you guys studied for hours and I was so bored!!" Jisung whined as he remembered the last time the three of them went into the library "Don't worry, I'm just going to borrow a book." Changbin reassured as the three of them walked into the library.
The three of them roamed the halls of education and it took a while for Changbin to find the book that he had been thinking of since yesterday but soon he was able to find it "Sign Language for Beginners?" Jisung read out as she looked at the cover of the book that Changbin was holding "Why do you need that?" Jisung asked in confusion realising that the book was something that could help him find a missing piece. "You know Kara Y/n?" Changbin asked and as soon as Jisung heard her name fly out of his mouth he had finally connected the dots "The mute girl?" Chan asked as confirmation to which Changbin nodded "She's the girl I was talking about earlier, I wanted to borrow a book about sign language so I could learn for her." Changbin explained with a giddy smile on his face "I'll be right back, I'm going to the register." Changbin informed as he walked towards the register.
Now it all made sense to Jisung, no wonder the girl Changbin was talking about seemed so familiar to him. But he couldn't help but feel a pinch of worry but he quickly shut those thoughts up as he watched Changbin register the book and smiled to himself 'Don't worry Jisung, your cousin is in good hands.'
