Date With... Oh No

Mentions of trauma from abuse. f u n

The Black Cat was empty, as always, and oh so quiet.

I sat in silence, tapping my fingers nervously against the table of the booth. The sleeves of my black undershirt were torn slightly from my nervous biting in the past and present. I was trying to get out of that habit - my shirts deserved some mercy.

Moon had messaged me about 5 minutes ago to inform me that my 'date' was arriving shortly. I was nearly shaking the whole table with my leg bouncing.

Oh, wait, I am. Better stop that...

After managing to calm my appendage, the door creaks open. I whip my head around...

... to see Sun standing in the archway, looking very confused.

He adjusted the collar of the white button up he wore under a maroon sweater as he walked over to me. "Ruin?" He sounded as confused as I was shocked.

I stand quickly, banging my knee on the table and nearly doubling over in pain, cursing under my breath. "S-Sun! Hello!"

"Why did Solar tell me to dress up and go to... here?"

Wonderful, Solar did not inform the 'date' that he was, in fact, the 'date'. Very fun.

"Uhhmmm.... No idea! Hold on, lemme ask." I pull out my phone and send a middle finger emoji to Solar. He sends a "good luck, pal" back before going offline. I pocket my phone. "Didn't give a straight answer."

Sun chuckles. "I mean, there's not a lot that is straight with that man."

"Homosexuals are weird."

"Very."

"We love them though."

"I'm related to half of them."

"Fair enough."

"I'm not one, though."

"Me neither!"

We stare at each other in awkward silence.

"I'm hungry," Sun finally says.

"Me too."

"Pancakes?

"Pancakes."

We got pancakes and sat down. I ignore the irony of us both saying we're not homosexuals when we're cis men on a forced date with one not aware he's on a date and the other internally screaming.

Sun takes a bite of his pancake and points his fork at me. "So, tell me: what's the gossip with Ruin?"

Gossip? "Uh, well..." I poke at my untouched pancake with my fork. "I learned that I have reflexes that can neuter a man! Thank Monty for scaring the daylights out of me when I was organizing the gift shop."

He nods and slowly crosses his legs. "I'll be sure to scare you a safe 6 feet away."

"Scare me at all and see what happens." The threat was meant to be playful, but Sun kept his legs crossed. "Well, what about you?" I set down the fork.

Sun eyes my uneaten pancakes but says nothing about it. For the moment, at least. "Oh, ya know - kids at the daycare. Eclipse... existing like the immortal brat he is. Moon and Solar being lovey-dovey to the point of puking." He gestures wildly with his syrup-covered trident. "I don't see the appeal of physical affection like they do."

I raise an eyebrow. The concept of someone wanting to spew at the idea of a hug was... foreign. "You don't like physical intimacy?"

"I don't hate it. It just feels..." He thinks. "... icky?"

"Why do you think that is?" I lean my elbows on the table.

Sun shrugs. "Well... Moon... I mean, before all that amnesia stuff with Kacey, he was..." His voice trails off. It doesn't take a orbital canon scientist to understand what he means.

"Physical..." I start. "In a negative way..?"

He nods.

I never knew the old Moon before he got that injury. I came into the picture much afterward, and even then I wasn't me. I didn't have a say on whether this 'version' was worse or better than the older one. I don't even know what he was like, save for videos on the channel he made with Sun a few years back. From those videos, I can see how verbally abuse he was to Sun. He's hit the other at least once. The channel doesn't show everything.

"Moon's changed." Sun's voice interrupts my thoughts. "I know that. The brother I grew up with is gone. They're similar, of course, but that's small stuff. His personality is the same, except for... the obvious." He looks at his hands in his lap. His tone is softer, weaker almost. "He'd never hurt anyone without a reason. Not anymore.

"He never hugged me unless we were about to die, and then there were his outbursts. I think all that kinda made touch a negative thing for me, ya know?" He waves his arms. "I-I didn't mean to dump all that on you, I'm sorry."

"It's fine," I said, and it was true. For a while I only ever saw Sun as a cleaner guy, the one that can't do technology but can surely get someone out of a tough mental spot if it was needed. This gave me a small insight into Sun. "You seemed like you needed to get that off your chest."

Sun stabs his pancakes, letting the fork stand by itself. He seemed less distracted, which I didn't notice he had seemed that way in the first place until it was gone. "I guess so. Anyway, enough about that."

Topic change. I could do that. "Say, do you, uh... have any idea as to why Solar wanted us here?" I knew the answer, of course. I just wanted to see if he had a hint about it.

"Not a clue." He sounded sincere.

I sigh. Of course. Sun was about the straightest person I knew, and I wasn't sure about my own sexuality. Or anything for that matter. "Wanna just get out of here?" I offer slowly.

Sun smiles and stands, grabbing my fork to stab it into my own uneaten, now cold pancakes. "Sure."
