Congrats, learn a new word that's mentioned in the chapter! Dorsal - the back of your hand. You have your palm, then you have your dorsal. "Dorsal" as a whole means the back of something, ex. a dorsal fin on a shark. Here it's used as the back of a hand.
The table was... well, awkward.
Monty and Earth sat on one side of the booth, Sun and I on the other. I was acutely aware of how close we were, the warmth his skin radiated without even touching him. I wondered if the rumors about warm bodies and cold hands were true, and I had to suppress the urge to test that theory.
I pull my sleeves down further on my arms. The building was always cold to me, though no one else thought so. Maybe I'm just not very good with cold temperatures.
Monty taps on my empty glass to get my attention. I look up quickly. "Huh?"
"We asked if you needed a refill," they said.
"Oh, uh, yes."
Monty stands, grabs all the glasses at the table, then leaves for the counter without glancing my way. Once again in the black café, and there were no staff. I didn't even ask if Monty had rented the place out as I'm sure I know the answer already.
Earth looks over to me and smiles. "So, Ruin, what's your favorite color?"
I hadn't expected to actually be part of the conversation. "Oh, hmm... Not sure actually, sorry." I chuckle nervously.
"It's alright!" Earth quickly added. "Well, what about season?"
I pause to think, then realize with a slight shock that my answer's the same. Upon relying that information, Earth's smile falters.
"Okay, well uhm... What about... Time of day?"
Same answer. So was favorite food, favorite drink, favorite hobby, do you know any jokes, what's a fun fact about yourself that we don't know. I had no clue.
Monty comes back with the drinks - my water, Sun's Root Beer, Earth's Fanta, and his own Cola. "What'd I miss?"
"Well," Earth explained, "I was asking Ruin about stuff he likes, and he didn't really have an answer. Which is fine," she added to me.
Monty scoffs. "Figures..."
My fingers twitched. "Pardon me?" I ask slowly. Sun glances at me, then at Earth.
'Nothin', nothin'," Monty insists.
"No no, I'd like you to repeat that." I had heard what he said, of course. I just wanted him to say it again.
"Ruin, dude, just forget about it so we can chill, okay?"
"I'm not going to 'chill', 'dude'." I stand, planting my hands on the table. "What did you mean by that?"
"By what?"
""Figures". I heard that, and I would like to know why you said it."
"Ruin, please." Sun reaches upward and puts a hand on my shoulder. "They didn't mean anything rude by it. They-"
Monty growls and stands with me. He was about half a foot taller than I, and much stronger in physique. The idea of him beating the daylights out of me made me stand a little less tall. "Yes I did, actually."
"Then-then what did you mean?" Stupid stutter.
Monty sneered down at me. "Well, isn't it obvious? I mean, you wouldn't know anything about yourself considering how long you've been infected."
