A Little Bit of Hope

Sorry I haven't posted in a while! Took a bit of a break for mental health issues.

Sun told me what happened after I left the 'date'. His yelling as I left was directed at telling off Monty for accusing me of being fake, which would have started a fight if Earth hadn't stopped Sun from throwing a punch. He eventually just left to find me.

He didn't tell me what the other said that had escalated the situation, and I didn't ask.

I nearly walked into an arcade machine with an "out of order" sign standing by the entrance to my 'room' - a karaoke room with a curtain over the entrance. Sun laughs at my struggle not to faceplant. "We're here, Ruin."

"Frankly, I don't need your sass."

Sun ignores my comment and rubs the back of his neck, looking at the starry curtain. "Well, uh... that was a disaster."

It took me a moment to realize he meant the 'date', not me nearly falling. "Oh, yeah..."

He clicks his tongue as I rock on the balls of my feet. I have to moisten my lips before I speak. "We should do it again, though... Just us two this time."

Sun looks back at me, and I feel my face heat. He's too pretty for this world, I think. "Like... another date?" he questions.

Oh, he knew it was a date.

"That is," I add, "if you want to! I-I certainly will not be forcing you. I just think I would enjoy it, and if you enjoyed it then maybe again?!"

Stop screaming at your crush.

Sun thinks for a bit before nodding. "Uhm... yeah, sure, we can... go on a date..? I mean, we're already here now, and it was a disaster before, so maybe this time it can just be... us?"

"Oh-Of course!" Ironically enough, I was still up for it - even if we were both too awkward and too confused. "Would you like to, uhh, just... sit in my 'room'? Not really a room, but it works..?"

"Sure." Sun lowers his hand from his neck and walks to the curtain, lifting it aside and letting me pass through first. He blinks at the sudden burst of neon lighting.

I gesture to a seat, which he takes. I plop myself next to him. While sitting, the top of my head was level with the bottom of his ears - whether that was because I was slouching without noticing or his sitting height was simply taller than mine, it was hard to tell.

There's silence before I decide to start a simple conversation. "What's your favorite color?"

Sun leans back on the couch. "I think... green."

"Oh, like Earth?" I laugh. Earth had helped him through a very rough time a while back, so I hear. Understandable that he'd find comfort in the color since Earth usually wore a lot of green.

He looks at me, and we make eye contact. "... Yeah, yeah..." he says slowly, not looking away from my eyes.

I look away first, staring at my shoes. I hear Sun sigh as I ask another question. "Hobbies?"

"Well, I like games. And cleaning." He chuckles. "If that wasn't obvious."

"Favorite activity with the kids?"

He doesn't need to think. "Arts and Crafts."

"Really?" I tilt my head to the side.

He nods. "I love it when the kids give me little crafts. There's one doll I have in my room just sitting there. I'm scared to touch it because it's falling apart, but they made a little mini Sunny!" *He smiles. "For the more... 'flat' projects - like simple drawings and such - I laminate them and stick them in binders. I have a lot from over the years. Speaking of which, I need to count how many binders I have now."

"Aw, that's sweet. None of the kids have made me crafts yet."

"Well, they love crafts! I'm sure at least a few are gonna give you some before the end of the month." He pauses. "And if not, well, we can make some together or I can make you some."

My heart melted at the idea of him making crafts for me. I imagined something with lots of glue and pastel colors.

There's another silence before I ask the question both of us have been avoiding. "What does this mean... for us?"

Sun sighs. "I'm not sure. I'm questioning... a lot of things right now."

"You and me both." I lean back. "So, just... talking? For right now at least. Until we figure out all of... this." I gesture between us.

"... Yeah." He smiles nervously at me. "Talking."

To be quite frank, I doubted this would lead to much. I thought we would both realize we were just friends and leave it at that, going on with our lives.

But oh, how I hoped it would be more.
