I'm not going to lie, I'm a little hurt. And by a little I mean a whole fucking lot.
"You know, my friend just canceled on me for breakfast here," Evelyn says. She stares directly at Santiago. "You don't mind if I join you guys, right, Sandy?"
"Of course you can." She gives Santiago a knowing smile after he says it.
Evelyn took over the entire breakfast. She talked to the host and convinced him to give us the best table in the house instead of the one we already had, which made another breakfast party wait a whole two hours. I gave them an awkward sorry wave as we made our way to the table.
Santiago and Aidan came to join us a few minutes later.
She's taken over the whole conversation. Catching up with the boys like they've been friends for years. They technically have been friends for years. Santiago stays silent the entire time and he won't even look at me.
He won't look at anyone. And I can feel my heart cracking with every minute that goes by of this breakfast.
"Oh my God, I feel like I haven't even spoken to you yet," Evelyn says, directing her and the entire table's direction to me. Everyone except Santiago. "Who even are you?"
My knee is bouncing up and down under the table. "Leilani," I say.
Evelyn gives me a look. It's almost patronizing, but to everyone else, it looks like she's interested in what I have to say. "What a pretty name. You're S's assistant, correct? You're the one who answered the phone when I called for him."
"Yeah, that's me. His assistant." The words I utter completely douse whatever bubble I was in before. I was no longer in the happy glow of a trip away from it all. Evelyn had destroyed it.
And what hurt me the most was that Evelyn clearly destroyed Santiago in some way. I've never seen him like this ever. At least not with me.
"Do you know you're so pretty? Isn't she extremely pretty?" Evelyn asks, turning to Camielle.
"Oh yeah! My friend is extremely pretty," she smiles, giving me a side hug.
Evelyn tilts her head to the side and smiles. "Are you seeing anybody? I know somebody who would be perfect for you."
You don't even know me, idiot. "I'm--" My knee is bouncing up and down extremely fast and I feel a hand brush against my thigh and grip it. For the first time since we sat down, Santiago's looking at me. Not only is he looking at me, but he's also touching me. Pleading me. My thighs stopped shaking. "It's complicated."
