Mark and Misty had a rough time finding their way out of Viridian Forest. It was easy for them to get lost. Eventually they arrived in Pewter City.

By the time they got there, they were tired and exhausted.

"We finally made it out of Viridian Forest." Mark said.

"I'm finally we're finally away from those bugs." Misty sighed in relief.

They went over to the Pokemon Center to rest.

"I should make sure Bulbasaur is in good shape for the gym battle." Mark handed Bulbasaur's Poke Ball to Nurse Joy.

It wasn't long before Bulbasaur was healed by Nurse Joy.

"Thanks, Nurse Joy." Mark took Bulbasaur's Poke Ball from her.

After Bulbasaur recovered, he and Misty had a meal at a nearby cafe.

"How do you think the gym battle will go?" Misty asked.

"Considering I'm using a grass type Pokemon, I should do well." Mark answered. "Admittedly, I should capture different types of Pokemon to deal with the other gym leaders."

Misty was impressed. He seemed to know a lot about type effectiveness.

After they were finished eating, Mark and Misty headed directly to the Pewter Gym. It was constructed entirely out of stone.

"Well, time to get a badge." He then opened the doors to step into the gym.

"Who goes there?" A voice asked from inside the gym.

"I'm Mark." Mark announced. "I came here to obtain the Boulder Badge."

"So be it." The voice said. "As the Pewter City gym leader, I accept your challenge."

They went to the battlefield. It was a sandy floor with big, pointy rocks strewn around it.

Misty saKt down in the bleachers to watch.

"This battle is between Brock the gym leader and Mark of Pallet Town." The referee announced.

"That's my brother Forrest." Brock introduced the referee.

"Both challengers will use a single Pokemon. The challenger who defeats a Pokemon first is the winner. Let the battle begin."

"Go, Bulbasaur!" Mark shouted.

"Okay, go Geodude!" Brock shouted.

Mark's mini laptop had the Pokedex installed on it.

"Geodude, the Rock Pokemon. Found in fields and mountains. Mistaking them for boulders, people often step or trip on them."

"Rock Throw!" Brock ordered.

"Slice through them with Razor Leaf." Razor sharp leaves came out of Bulbasaur's bulb and hit Geodude.

Since Geodude is also a ground type Pokemon, it did 4x the damage. Razor Leaf knocked Geodude out right away.

"Geodude is no longer able to battle. Bulbasaur wins and the winner of this gym battle is Mark." Forrest announced.

After the gym battle, Brock shook his hand.

"That was a great battle." Brock said. "I hereby present you with the Boulder Badge."

It was a badge shaped like a octagon.

Having obtained the Boulder Badge, Mark and Misty headed to the Pokemon Center. After Bulbasaur was healed, they decided to head to the next city with a gym badge.

"I was expecting you to have a harder time with that gym battle. You nailed it with flying colors though."

"Without a doubt."

They were about to leave when a voice stopped them.

"Wait up!" It came from Brock.

"Brock, what are you doing?" Mark asked.

"I'm going to travel with you guys." He answered.

"Don't you have a gym to run?" Misty reminded him.

"Not anymore. My dad just got out of the hospital and will take my place." Brock informed them. "Do you have a problem with me joining you."

"Give us a minute." Mark took Misty to the side.

"What do you suggest?" He whispered.

"Let him accompany us." Misty whispered back.

"Alright." Mark nodded before facing Brock.

"Come on." He gestured to Brock.
