After reuniting the maiden and her lover and helping them pass onto heaven, Mark, Misty and Brock could continue traveling to Saffron City. Right now, they traveled through a forest and it was getting dark.
"I hope we come across Saffron City soon." Misty told the others. "It's getting late."
"What Pokemon will you use in your gym battle?" Brock asked.
"At this point I'm still determining that." Mark sincerely answered.
He currently didn't have Pokemon that were super effective against psychic types.
"At this point I'll just use Pikachu." He eventually came to a decision that Pikachu would participate in the battle.
"It's better than nothing." Brock said.
Just then they heard laughter from some nearby bushes. The laughter's source was a girl around six years old with a white hat on her head and a white ball in her hands.
"Excuse me." Mark tried to get her attention. "Would you know if we're close to Saffron City?"
The little girl just laughed again and ran into the bushes.
"All I was doing was asking for directions." Mark muttered.
The group followed the path the little girl took and soon stumbled upon Saffron City.
"Wow, it's beautiful." Misty happily sighed.
"I guess seeing that girl was a good luck charm." Brock chuckled.
"Looks like this is one of those times following a stranger works to our advantage." Mark whispered.
After staying inside the Pokemon Center for the night, the gang then made their way to the Saffron Gym. It was a dome-shaped gym.
"This is where I'll obtain my fourth badge." Mark said to himself.
He was just about to enter the gym when a man with a beard interrupted him.
"Are you going to battle Sabrina?" He asked.
He stared at Mark and seemed to be studying him.
"Yeah I am, who are you?"
"If I were you kid, I'd head to another gym." The man stated. "Sabrina won't go easy on a beginner like you."
Mark shook his head.
"Sorry, but I'm not going anywhere." He politely turned the suggestion down.
He then walked into the gym with Misty and Brock following him.
Inside they saw a lot of people seated at tables. Some of them were staring at spoons, like they were trying to bend them. The rest were trying to guess the shape on cards without looking at them.
"What are they doing?" Misty asked.
"Hey, what are you kids doing here." A voice called out.
It was a man in a lab coat.
"I'm here to challenge Sabrina to a gym battle." Mark replied.
This caused the man to chuckle.
"If you're here to challenge the great Sabrina." He said. "Then you're in trouble."
"Why is that?" Misty asked. "And what are those people doing?"
It didn't take long for her to find out.
"If I had to guess, they're trying to bend the spoons with telekinesis."
