The damp sand beneath them started to dry as they walked away from the shore.

Taking a bite of her raw mango snack, Krithika asked, "So, how's life?"

"Pretty good. It's the final year now, so I'm kind of agitated with the major project," Karthik said, taking a slice from her hand and nibbling on it. "It's fun but stressful as well."

She nodded. "Then, MBA or straight to business?"

He choked. "What? No way!" He coughed while Krithika patted his back. "I'm preparing for GATE."

"I thought you were doing engineering just for a pretend degree to get by," she shrugged. "What about Appa's business? Aren't you his precious little heir, planning to inherit his tiny empire?"

"You're sarcastically funny," he chuckled, passing his slice of mango back to her. "You were the business brain in our family. It never interested me, Akka."

Is it?

"Oh."

Scanning the area, she spotted a place near the never-ending junk food stalls and pointed it out to Karthik. "Let's sit there," she said. They walked over and sat down.

Karthik brushed sand off his chappals. "I want to stick with engineering. Maybe in the future, I'll try my luck in the automotive field or something related."

What the fuck?

"What!?" Krithika shrieked, drawing curious glances from bystanders.

"Why are you so shocked?" he frowned.

Calm the fuck down.

"No, I'm just... surprised," she said, clearing her throat and mentally kicking herself for the overreaction. "You never mentioned being interested in that stuff."

"I'd reframe that—you never cared to ask," he said with a sad chuckle.

After a pause, he continued, "Not your fault. You were busy fighting your battles." Resting his elbow on her shoulder like a stand, he added, "I've always been into engineering. Appa's still pissed and thinks he can manipulate me into the family business," his eyes distant. "But that's not me. I'm a simple guy who gets excited about machines and loves being around them."

"Why automotive?" she asked quickly.

He flinched slightly. "Oh, nothing. I was reading about your boss, Mr. Joseph. He inspired me to think about my options," Karthik said, raising his brows at her. "He's something else, isn't he?"
