Sequel of chapter 2

Ashwath Pawar sat by his wife's bed, his face etched with a mixture of sorrow and longing. In his forties, he had never imagined that his life would be consumed by this moment of helplessness. His fingers gently brushed against Ahalya Apte's pale hand, her skin cool to the touch, yet he held onto it as though it were the last tether to the world he knew.

The machines beside her bed beeped rhythmically, an indifferent reminder of the life she once had. The sterile scent of antiseptic clung to the room, but it was the silence between them that felt suffocating. Ahalya's stillness only deepened the chasm within him.

"How did we get here, Ahalya?" he murmured, his voice breaking with the weight of the question

"How did we get here, Ahalya?" he murmured, his voice breaking with the weight of the question. His eyes, red-rimmed from sleepless nights and endless hours of waiting, filled with unspoken words. "I keep replaying everything in my mind, over and over again. What more could I have done? Why did I let it all slip away?"

He took a deep breath, feeling the familiar pang of guilt stab at his chest. "You were my everything," he continued, his voice barely a whisper, as though speaking too loudly might shatter the fragile connection they still shared. "When I wake up in the morning, it feels like a dream, and when night falls, it feels like you might just walk through that door. But... you don’t. Not anymore."

Ashwath squeezed her hand, pressing his forehead to the edge of the bed, his tears falling freely now. "I miss you so much, Ahalya. I need you here. I need your voice. I need your warmth. This... this emptiness is unbearable."

He stood, pacing the room with restless energy, his eyes never leaving her still form. "If I could trade places with you, I would. I would do anything. I just want to see your eyes open again. To hear you laugh that beautiful laugh of yours. It feels like the world is on pause without you here."

He stopped at the window, staring out at the dull skyline, his thoughts far away, yet tethered to the present moment. "I never showed you how much I loved you," he muttered, the words hanging heavy in the air. "But I loved you more than you’ll ever know. And I still do."

Turning back to her, he wiped his face with the back of his hand, his voice trembling with desperation. "Please, Ahalya... please come back to me. I can’t live without you. I don’t know how to."

The room seemed to close in on him, the quiet hum of the machines and the faint beep of the heart monitor echoing louder than his own voice. With one last, deep breath, he sank back into the chair beside her, holding her hand once more, his tears silently falling as he whispered, "Please wake up, my love. I need you."

Ashwath’s heart ached as he sat beside Ahalya’s bed, his hand gently cradling hers. He could feel the pulse of his own emotions, the longing and helplessness swirling inside him as he whispered, "How long will you continue to hold her? The possibility of her awakening seems distant," Dr. Robert remarked, his voice tinged with concern.
