A few days ago,

The golden hues of dawn spilled gently through the sheer curtains, painting the modest living room with a soft, tranquil light. Ashwath sat in his usual chair, the creak of its old wooden frame accompanying the rustle of the newspaper in his hands. The scent of freshly brewed coffee lingered in the air, a quiet testament to the morning’s routine. He adjusted his glasses, squinting slightly as he scanned the headlines, his furrowed brow suggesting he was deep in thought.

From the adjacent bedroom came the faint sounds of movement—Ahalya was preparing for work. The rhythmic swish of her sari and the occasional clink of bangles filled the house with a comforting melody, one Ashwath had grown to cherish. The familiarity of her routine was a steady anchor, grounding him in the midst of life’s unpredictabilities.

Just then, a soft shuffle of footsteps broke his focus. His daughter, Nisha, emerged from her room, her hair adorably tousled from sleep and her eyes still heavy with dreams. Her small frame was wrapped in a cozy blanket, which she clutched tightly, dragging it slightly behind her as she made her way toward him. Despite her drowsiness, a faint smile played on her lips, lighting up her delicate features.

Ashwath’s expression softened instantly. He folded the newspaper and set it aside, the stern lines of his face giving way to pure affection.

“Good morning, my little princess,” he greeted warmly, his deep voice carrying a tenderness reserved only for her. He held out his arms, inviting her into his embrace.

Nisha climbed onto his lap, her tiny arms circling his neck as she buried her face against his shoulder. Ashwath wrapped his arms around her protectively, holding her close as if to shield her from the world. Her soft, baby-powder scent tugged at his heartstrings, reminding him just how fleeting these moments of innocence were.

“Did you sleep well, cupcake?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper as he gently rubbed her back in soothing circles.

Nisha murmured incoherently, her small voice muffled by his shoulder. She nuzzled deeper into his chest, the slow rhythm of his heartbeat lulling her back into a state of drowsy comfort.

Ashwath chuckled softly, his breath warm against her hair. “Still sleepy, huh?” he teased gently. “I guess it’s okay for a princess to take her time waking up.”

A faint giggle escaped Nisha before she relaxed completely, her breathing growing slow and steady. Ashwath leaned back slightly, cradling her with care as he watched her drift back to sleep. The weight of her tiny body against him filled him with a sense of purpose and unconditional love that words could never capture.

Ahalya stepped into the hall, her slender fingers deftly fastening the delicate clasp of her wristwatch as she moved with quiet grace. Draped in a soft pastel sari with an intricately embroidered border, she looked effortlessly elegant, her attire a perfect blend of tradition and modernity. A leather bag hung over one shoulder, signaling her readiness to face a busy day at the office. Despite the demands that awaited her, her gaze softened as it fell on the serene domestic tableau before her.

Ashwath sat in his usual chair, his arms wrapped securely around Nisha, who clung to him with the unrelenting stubbornness only a child could muster. Her small frame was nestled against his chest, her eyes half-closed in sleepy defiance. A faint smile played on Ahalya’s lips as she took in the sight—the father-daughter bond that filled the room with warmth and love.

“Nisha,” Ahalya called softly, her voice a gentle yet firm reminder. “Come on, sweetheart, you’ll be late for school.” She moved closer, her sari’s pallu trailing behind her, the faint rustle of fabric adding to the morning’s quiet symphony.
