As the faculty meeting ends, I feel relieved. It's been a long session, and I just want to go home and relax. I hear someone call my name in a too-friendly way as I gather my papers. I inwardly sigh—it's her again, a colleague who's been hitting on me since I started here. Despite me showing I'm not interested, she keeps trying to get my attention.
"Hey, Ace!" She calls out again when I don't turn around, and I reluctantly face her.
"Hey," I respond, mustering a polite smile as she approaches. "How are you doing?"
"Good, good," she replies nervously, blushing slightly. "How about you?"
"I'm hanging in there," I respond, and she bites her lip, searching for something else to say.
"So, any plans for the weekend?" She asks, fidgeting with her hair.
"Not really, just taking it easy," I say, putting my hand inside my pocket. "How about you? Anything exciting going on?"
"Oh, nothing much, just probably hanging out with some friends," she says timidly.
Then, she looks around the hallways and leans in, touching my arm. I flinch and instinctively pull back, feeling uncomfortable. She notices and coughs softly, forcing a smile that looks awkward.
"Um, I...I was wondering if you'd like to grab a drink after work? You know, just hang out and catch up?" She asks hopefully.
"That sounds nice, but I have plans already," I explain, still trying to recover from her sudden touch.
"Oh, okay. Maybe another time then?" She says and I sigh.
"I'll be honest. I'm already in a serious relationship and I want to focus on us. I love her a lot and it wouldn't be right for me to lead you on, so I think it's best if you don't waste your time with me," I explain, looking straight into her eyes.
"Oh, I see," she murmurs, her smile strained, looking disappointed. "I didn't know. Sorry for asking,"
"It's alright,"
With a forced smile, she nods and leaves. Later in the day at my penthouse, as I wrap up my work in my office, feeling exhausted and tense, I decide to call Olivia. She takes a while to pick up, likely caught up with studying for her finals.
Yet, I don't feel guilty interrupting her because I need my daily dose of her. When she finally answers, her voice soothes me instantly, bringing a smile to my face.
