Tobias Miller's POV
"Ma is this all absolutely necessary?" I ask.
We've gone shopping for some gifts for my dad, before his party on Saturday.
"When you're married and in love I hope you don't question the necessity of the little things" she replies.
Little?!
"Ma you literally brought him a brand new car" I remind her.
She shrugs.
"Listen, new money. When you get as much money as I do, and your partner is as good as my husband as wonderful as mine, giving him the world isn't enough". She says, side eyeing me.
I shrug.
"Fair enough" I respond.
She goes back to browsing the jewellery on display, anticipating whether or not my dad needs a new ring or not.
I feel my phone buzz with a text and I pick it up.
Ziva.
I immediately think back to the last time I saw her and my heart flips.
I think her eyes will be the death of me.
The way she looks at me paired with the wholesome and then the opposite thoughts I have of her will definitely send me to an early grave.
I read her text and it's about cake sampling.
She's inviting me and whoever I like to come and try some examples before she gets opinions on designs.
I shoot her a text back asking when and where.
She responds:
Right now.
My heartbeat quickens and before I can respond, I hear my mother speak.
"Is that our chef?" She asks casually.
I snap my neck towards her.
"Our?" I ask her.
She chuckles.
"Your girlfriend, my daughter in law. I think it's safe to say 'our', don't you agree?" She asks.
I look at my mother dumbfounded.
"She is not my girlfriend" I say.
My mother shrugs.
"I put $150 on a very specific bet." She says casually.
"What?!" I ask.
"Your uncle Jayden put down $180 and your uncle Khyrie, ever the optimist, put down $200 in opposition" she says, making the last part as sarcastic as possible.
"Is anyone else in on this so called bet?" I ask, incredulously.
She shrugs.
"You'll find out eventually" she says.
My jaw all but hangs.
"Aren't you gonna go?" She asks, as if she didn't just disclose the fact that she has money on my head right now.
"Would you like to come with me? She's extending the invitation" I ask.
I love my mother, but this invitation is just to be polite.
I know that she or anyone else will just embarrass me.
My mother shakes her head.
"Nah, you go. I've invited your aunties Te'Aryah and Amulya along so they're on their way" she says excitedly.
