Maenya POV

All the Lords of the small council, my sister and I were called to the small council Chambers for my father's decision on who he would marry.

Everyone, including myself had assumed he would choose the Lady Laena Velaryon.

All the Lords sat down as Rhaenyra and I stood side by side next to the table, waiting for an answer.

My father turned around from facing the window to look at all of us
"Good morrow, my lords"

One thing that did catch my eye, though was that Alicent was there.
She never came to small council meetings, she was not a cupbearer.

I hoped it wasn't what I thought it was and I pushed it to the back of my mind paying attention to my father.

"I have decided to take a new wife..."

My sister gave our father a nod of approval, and Lord Corlys sat forward in anticipation, waiting to hear his daughter's name leave the Kings lips.

"I intend to marry...the Lady Alicent Hightower before springs end"

Rhaenyra looked utterly destroyed, as I suppose she had a right to be her best friend would now marry our father and be our stepmother.
Though something else caught my eye, Alicent's reaction.

It was not one of joy, nor of plotting. No malicious intent was on the girls face on the contrary. She looked just as distraught as Rhaenyra at the news that she would marry the king.

Lord Corlys stood up
"This is an absurdity..." he was livid
"My house is Valyrian, the greatest power in the realm"

"And I am your king" father said back in the same tone

Corlys stormed out of the room and Rhaenyra soon followed.

Alicent Hightower would become the new queen consort of the seven kingdoms and she didn't seem happy about it, not one bit...
