December passed by and when the new year arrived, y/n was fully occupied. The brightly colored Christmas season was over, which meant cold, gray weather. This in turn meant that cursed spirits came crawling out of every hole, because this time of year was the time of winter depression. So she got up every morning with sore muscles before she and Gojo set off. In the evening she always fell into bed dead tired. The main person who got the short end of the stick during the whole time was Oni. She hadn't seen him since New Year's Eve, which was a few weeks ago.

But today she had dealt with the curse quickly and it hadn't particularly strong, what meant she wasn't that exhausted. So she decided to surprise Oni.

She made an extra effort before heading out, even daring to put on matching underwear. She was sorry that she had neglected him. She didn't want to intentionally charm Oni, that wasn't her plan, but who knew what the evening would bring.

But as soon as he opened the door to his apartment, she sensed that something was wrong. She just didn't know what it was.

"Y/n, what are you doing here?", Oni asked. Somehow his hair was falling strangely today. Nevertheless, she smiled lovingly at him. "I wanted to surprise you. I know we haven't seen each other often, in the last weeks."

"It's no problem... Yes, surprise... you succeeded," when he pulled her in to give her a kiss, she smelled it. A foreign scent. And her intuition told her that he hadn't changed his perfume. She promptly pushed him away and the way he looked at her... he didn't look surprised.

"Oni," she said slowly. She couldn't continue talking straight away. It was as if her throat was being constricted. "Please be honest. Is anyone here?"

At first he hesitated. But then he nodded. "What did you expect? You're not really interested in me, you're busy all the time."

"What's that supposed to mean?", she crossed her arms indignantly in a defensive pose. "Didn't you always say everything was fine? I know that I'm not behaving optimally..."

"Yes, exactly, you didn't. And if you know it yourself, why are you upset?", he sounded more distant than y/n had ever heard it from him before. His tone felt like a slap in the face. "What? If that's how you've felt the whole time, why didn't you dump me?"

He shrugged, unfazed by her scolding. "When you have some time, it's always nice."

He was laughing at his own impudence. Y/n's hand landed on his face with a slapping sound.

"Who do you think you are? Stupid bitch," Oni said, holding his hit cheek.

"Asshole," she spat at his feet. Then she turned on her heel and stormed out of the apartment.

She didn't really notice where she was going. Eventually she found herself in a small street food joint, a bowl of ramen in front of her, staring into space. She couldn't quite place how she felt. Of course she felt bad, she was sad and hurt. But not because Oni was that important to her. She knew she didn't need him. But he had humiliated her. She was ashamed that she had let herself be taken for a ride. She was so ashamed that she felt sick and tears filled her eyes.

As she grabbed some of the ramen with her chopsticks, a terrible thought suddenly struck her. What if it really had been her fault? Because she had neglected him. Maybe it was karma. But that was nonsense, right?

Her thoughts tormented her all night long. They took over her so much that she couldn't even make it back to the academy. Maybe she didn't want to go back to the academy. Her eyes were red and puffy, her makeup was running, she had seen that on the selfie camera of her phone. So she found herself somewhere in Tokyo, sitting on some bench as the sun slowly climbed over the horizon. Her eyes burned from the bright light. She had to get away from here. Somewhere where she could hide behind drawn curtains. So she stood up. Every part of her body ached as she walked. Probably because she had spent the whole night in the cold.

When she finally arrived at the academy, it was just before noon. Shit, she had missed half a day of class. Gojo would definitely want to know why.

"Hello little Miss up-all-night." She heard Gojo before she saw him. "Had a wild night? Looks like it."

He leaned in the gate of the main entrance to the temple complex. He had probably been watching her for a while before she even could have spotted him. "I almost told Yaga. I've been trying to call you for three hours."

"Oh, you did," apathetically she stared at the display of her cell phone. There were a few missed calls. Now he pushed himself off the gate frame and came towards her. "Girl... You really look terrible. What happened? Don't tell me you tried drugs or something?"

Since he was wearing his blindfold again, she couldn't read his facial expressions. But to be honest, she didn't even try. "I want to lay down."

"But it's time for class," he contradicted and shook his head. But she didn't just wasn't in the mood. "I'm sick!"

"Oh is that so? What is wrong with you? Another hangover...", at first Gojo laughed. But then he reached out to feel her forehead and flinched back. "You're cold like ice. Just tell me finally. Where have you been?"

She didn't answer him and walked past him. "Y/n! I've asked you something, multiple times now!"

"Leave me alone," she just grumbled, then left him there. She had expected him to continue arguing, but he didn't. Instead, he remained silent and she continued walking undeterred.

When she got to her room, she took off her jacket with a groan. Then she shuffled to the window and closed the curtains before falling into her bed like a lifeless body.

"I made you tea," Gojo whistled and she heard dishes clinking. "Stop acting y/n, I know you're just pretending to sleep!"
