It was the middle of January and it was freezing. There was a recent blizzard and the ground was still covered in snow. The wind didn't help either. I had on multiple layers, gloves, a hat, and a scarf and I was still cold. I walked as quickly as I could to get home from school. I took the fastest route, which involved a shortcut under an overpass which was a little sketchy but I didn't care; I was cold and wanted to get home. I kept my head down to avoid the cold air stinging my eyes and moved as fast as I could.
"Slow down!" I heard someone call. I stopped and turned around. There were two guys, probably a few years older than me, standing a few feet behind me. "Where are you rushing to?"
"It's freezing. I want to get somewhere warm." I told them. I had no intention of telling them where I was actually going. I turned forward and started walking again.
"Not so fast there sweetheart" a different guy stepped out in front of me. I glanced over my shoulder and saw that the two guys were now much closer to me.
"What do you want?" I asked impatiently.
"Give us your money. And phone." The first guy ordered.
I froze. My heart rate started increasing and I suddenly wasn't so cold. "What?" I asked shakily.
"You heard me. Give us your stuff. Money. Phone." He repeated. I eyed one of the other guys who pulled a knife out of his pocket and flicked the blade open. "Now do you know what we want?" He asked.
Not wanting to get stabbed, I pulled my phone out of my pocket. The guy nodded at me. I clutched my phone tightly.
"I'll take that." The guy quickly stepped toward me and grabbed the phone out of my hand. "What else've you got? Where's your wallet?"
"I don't have any money" my voice shook as I spoke but it was the truth. Not many 15 year olds are walking around with loads of cash on them.
"You've gotta have something." He said. Some guy from behind me pulled at my backpack, causing me to go tumbling backwards.
"What's in there?" He asked.
"School work." I told them. I felt my heart pounding. I just wanted to get out of there. The guy kicked me onto my side and my face landed on a rock. He forcefully ripped my backpack off of me, twisting my arm awkwardly. He rummaged through my bag and threw my things all over the place.
"The bitch wasn't lyin'. She ain't got nothin'" the guy reported to the others.
"Useless" the leader kicked me in the side before he and his crew scampered away.
I laid there on the ground and tried to take in what just happened. There was blood on my face, my arm was aching, and I could feel a bruise forming on my side. On top of that, it was freezing and my hat and scarf had been shaken off in the struggle. I needed help and had no way of getting it. I tried to push myself off the ground but failed. I began to cry. I felt like I had been lying there for hours. I was getting tired. I had stopped shivering and I was struggling to keep my eyes open. I was cold and tired. Despite my best efforts to stay awake, I fell asleep.Casey POV
We were on our way back to the station after dealing with a small kitchen fire. A young child had tried to use the stove without his parents and it ended in flames. Fortunately, no one was hurt and we managed to put it out quickly. Kidd and Herrmann were teasing Mouch about something and I could hear them laughing behind me. I stared out the window as we drive down a quiet street.
"Otis, stop!" I ordered. Something caught my eye. I thought I saw a person half covered by snow. Otis, although confused, stopped the truck and I quickly hopped out. I ran toward where I thought the person was.
"Hey, Casey, slow down!" I heard Herrmann shout. I could hear the others running after me.
I was right. I stopped in my tracks when I came to a young girl lying on the ground. A backpack was beside her with its belongings scattered about.
"Hey!" I shouted, to get her attention. She didn't react. "Kid!" I called. I knelt beside her. By now, everyone else was standing behind me. "Wake up!" I shook the girl's shoulder. She groaned but didn't open her eyes or move. I noticed blood staining the snow. "C'mon. Wake up for me. I'm here to help you." I shook her again to try and get her to wake up more. It didn't work. I heard Kidd call for an ambo and Herrmann knelt next to me.
"Let's get her out of this snow." He said. I nodded and lifted up the girl. Herrmann was ready with a wool blanket and wrapped it around her. I heard the sirens approaching and saw 61 coming down the street. I started walking towards them.
"What've we got?" Gabby asked as she and Brett climbed out of the ambulance.
"No idea. Found her in the snow. Barely responding." I reported. As I placed the girl on the stretcher, Gabby paused. "What is it?" I asked.
"I know her. Halstead's sister." Gabby said. "Can you call Jay?" She asked me. I nodded and watched as Brett and Gabby began treating the girl.
