"Ugh I can't believe I will be getting a new roommate today, a freshman at that," I yelled, hurling a tennis ball against the concrete wall. The muted thud echoed, the ball bouncing back lazily before rolling to the far corner of the room.

The hostel room was far from luxurious; the walls were an off-white shade, peppered with years of scratches and dents. Two single beds were crammed into the place, each with thin mismatched sheets. My side of the room was cluttered with basketballs, sneakers and half empty water bottles. The air smelled faintly of pine-scented floor cleaner, not enough to overpower the occasional musty smell that always creeps in from the hallway. Since the school was constructed in 1982 they haven't done any renovations to the hostel and I was annoyed of staying in this dump.

" I tried telling you to move into my dorm room so we could finally be roommate's but you refused," Martha teased, her manicured hands gently massaging my scalp.

" I don't want to leave this room and Mrs Ndemwa said she will no longer change my roommates." Just thinking of how much I'd pleaded with her to let me stay alone was enough to make my blood boil. Doesn't my father donate enough money to this rundown school to grant me one simple request?

"Yeah cause you change them like the way you change your clothes, now she hates you."

" Is it my fault that I don't like them, plus that woman never liked me."

"Cause she finds you in a different girls bed every night," she says, cupping my face, and squishing my cheeks playfully.

"They invited me and it would be rude of me to decline."

"I think you should decline... and look for something stable."

"I already have financial stability. I don't need any other stability."

" Oh please don't tell me you have never desired to be in a relationship Mary
Jane?"

I turned and grabbed her by the neck.

" I told you to never call me that," I said, squeezing a little tighter.

" Okey... okey I'm sorry, slip of the tongue," she said, coughing and moving a distance away from me.

I waited for her to continue our conversation but she kept quiet so I decided to answer her question.

" Not really plus I'm too hot for only one person," I mumbled, resting my head on her lap again.

"One day you will fall in love."

"With who?" I asked, looking at her.

" Anyone," she replied blushing.

"I will have to pass, I don't get involved in things that require emotions," I declared, my eyes flicking to the door. My roommate would arrive any minute now, and I already felt the disruption to my perfectly curated chaos.

"Isn't she supposed to be here ?"

"Maybe the universe has felt pity on me and decided to spare me the troubles of dealing with someone new," I said, rubbing my chest absentmindedly.

And then it came - a knock.

" Aren't you going to open the door?" Martha asked with an arched brow.

" No, let her wait," I said, settling comfortably on Martha's hips and savoring the last moments of peace.

After a few more insistent knocks, I finally dragged my feet to the door almost knocking over a basketball. When I opened it, I froze.

Standing there was a shirt girl with chocolate-brown skin and long, neatly braided hair cascading down her back. She was bent over rummaging through her monkey bag. When she looked up, her almond shaped eyes sparkled with a hint of amusement as she tucked a stray braid behind her ear.
