beep. beep. beep. beep. beeeeeeeeep...

~~~
I wake up.
I hear a long and continuous beep.
Ma is crying.
“Ma, why are you crying?” I try to ask. She doesn’t seem to hear me.
“Oh, Gabbi, my baby, please come back,” Ma says through sobs.
“I’m right here, Ma.” She ignores me again.
I turn around and see myself in a bed. Must be a mirror, I think to myself. I look around a little more and see a computer with a green line on it. Isn’t that a hospital heartbeat monitor? Suddenly, I remember the fire.
Oh. OH.
Am I…
No. It can’t be.
There’s no way I’m… dead…
Right?
I try laying back into my body. Nothing happens. I try screaming. No one seems to notice.
So…
Am I a ghost?
There is no way I’m a ghost…
Ghosts aren’t real…
I try going through a wall. To my fascination, I find that I can. Maybe I am a ghost.
Wait… but that means…
My soul stayed for revenge…
But on what?
The rafter? The candle? My idiocy? It’s probably the last one.
Well… I’m only twelve…
So maybe it’s only because I died too early?
Oh. So, if I’m a ghost, that means I can’t help carry things anymore…
Meaning I’m useless…
