Basil stood up and dusted off the back of his shorts. He walked forward and exhaled with a sense of calm. "It's been so long since we've hung out all as a group. I guess between me and Sunny's stay at the hospital, and then all the preparations for school, it's just been so busy. We haven't had much time to spend all together to catch up..." He said with a wistful expression, looking out at the "lake", which was more of a pond, but nobody really called it that.
Hero spoke up and reassured Basil, "Hey, don't worry about it. The important thing is that everyone's safe. We should focus on what's ahead and treasure the time we have together right now." He spoke quite confidently. He was far more put together now than he was at the hospital.
Kel sounded off after his brother, "Yeah, chin up, Basil! We'll still meet up and hang out whenever we can, right? Plus, Sunny's still gonna be at our school, so it'll be just like old times!"
"Yeah, just 'cause I have new friends doesn't mean I'm gonna ditch you guys right after we made amends." Aubrey added, "Just don't expect me to drop plans with the gang for it."
"N-No, I'd never!" Basil waved his hands. He didn't want to come off as selfish with what he said.
"I know, I'm just messin'. Anyway, Sunny, if anything bad happens in the city, you can always tell us. Don't try to shoulder stuff by yourself. We're all here for you." Aubrey said with a serious expression. It was never obvious when she was "messing" because of how serious she always looked. Almost always, at least.
"Aw, Aubrey..." Kel teased.
Aubrey looked annoyed, "What, you think I can't be worried?"
"Heh, it's nothing, you just become such a softie when he's around." Kel further teased.
Aubrey raised her fist, "The only thing soft around here is your skull, dumbass."
"Easy, Aubrey." Hero said with a sigh, "But seriously, Kel, Sunny said to not joke about stuff like that anymore."
"Wha!? When!?" Kel asked with incredulity, entirely clueless to when this exchange happened.
Hero explained, "Well, when you were 12-"
"Twelve!? You think I'm gonna remember stuff from that long ago!?" Kel interrupted with more incredulousness.
"Well, I did..." Hero said, disappointed in his brother's memory, "Anyway Sunny, Aubrey is right, you can give any of us a call whenever you need someone. Even me... which, maybe I should give you my cell number so you actually can call me." Hero grabbed his phone from his pocket, "Er... do you have a cell phone?"
Sunny shook his head.
"Alright, I'll just write it down on something later." Hero said awkwardly.
Kel's stomach was next to enter the conversation, making a notably loud sound for someone's internal organs.
"Whoops, sorry." Kel said with some embarrassment, "Preeeetty sure that was me."
"Wh- Have you been eating bacon grease!? How does someone's stomach make a noise like that!?" Aubrey asked with a raised voice, shocked at the loud volume Kel's stomach had practically shouted at.
"I can't help it! I haven't eaten since this morning! I forgot to pack my lunch last night, and nobody brought food!" Kel whined.
Hero agreed, "Honestly, I'm pretty hungry, too."
Aubrey sighed and then said, "Same." with a slightly embarrassed expression.
"What about you two?" Kel asked Basil and Sunny.
The dark-haired boy shrugged while Basil paused. "Oh! Um, I could grab a bite to eat... I don't really mind, though!" He said as to not seem pushy.
"If you told me you were hungry, I could've made something for everyone to eat, Kel." Hero said, feeling a bit bad. Kel stood up and pointed to the sky.
"I know what we should do! We should go down to Gino's and have one of their signature double-XL pizzas!" Kel exclaimed.
"Not a bad idea. We could all get different toppings for different parts of the pizza and share it." Hero once again agreed with his brother.
"They only do quarters, not fifths. But if I recall correctly, Sunny and Basil both only like pepperoni on theirs, so it shouldn't be that big of a deal." Aubrey said with a shrug, "Plus, it'll stop Kel from inhaling it like he usually does."
"It was like... only four times! I don't do that anymore anyway!" Kel protested.
"Alright then, as long as everyone is okay with it, let's go to Gino's. My treat." Hero said with a smile.
"WOO! Hero, you're the best!" Kel declared.
Basil smiled warmly and made sure to check Sunny's reaction to see if he was okay with it. It may have been fulfilling the dream, but surely things would be okay for Sunny, right?
Sunny didn't seem opposed to the idea, so things should be fine, "Thanks a lot, Hero! Er... it might be a lot for just one meal, though. Are you sure it's alright?"
"It's for my friends, so twenty bucks is like spending nothing at all." Hero reassured.
Everyone began to stand up to leave. Sunny didn't yet, but that was normal for him. He usually liked to fall behind and let the others go ahead. Basil approached and asked him, "Do you want me to go on ahead or wait back here with you?"
"Go." Sunny said softly. He seemed very serious for some reason. Basil did as asked and left the clearing. But, while the others went on ahead, Basil stayed back, waiting for Sunny.
This wouldn't take long, would it?
