Miles of Regrets

Come on, Basil, just get up. You're never going to make it to school if you keep lying there. Wake up. Wake up!

Basil opened his eyes wide and exhaled a breath he was holding since he woke up initially. He sat up and rubbed his eyes, removing some gunk that was enjoying itself sitting in the corners of Basil's bright blue eyes.

The blonde stood up and stretched, then rolled his neck a bit, removing a crick. "Ugh... it's the first day of school." He groaned as he rubbed his eyes again. Basil was not a morning person.

He walked towards his dresser and put on the clothes he left on top of it. Polly suddenly knocked on the door, making Basil jump. "I-I'm awake!" He shouted through the door.

Polly answered happily, "Oh, good! I was afraid I would have to wake you up. Make sure to come have breakfast soon!" She was always so cheery in the mornings. Basil couldn't help but be a bit jealous.

He pulled off his pyjama top and bottoms and then took a pair of underwear off of the dresser. He quickly put them on, only having a bit of trouble around the very middle of his thighs. The widest area of anyone's legs. It only took a little bounce for the waistband to lift up to where it belonged.

The rest was easier. Pants had far stretchier waistbands, and Basil was pretty in shape, so he had no trouble with his shirt or sweatervest. Basil pulled his collar through the neck hole of the vest and sighed with relief. Finally, his socks. Basil put them on as one would expect, exhaling through his nose as he did.

He stood back up and opened his door, finally done dressing in his meticulous outfit. The boy's green sweatervest complimented his eyes quite nicely, a dark green contrasting the lighter blue.

Basil smiled as he entered the breakfast. He began to think about his friend, Sunny. He hadn't seen the boy in person in two weeks. They only spoke over AIM and Skype, which wasn't bad or anything, but it wasn't the same as seeing Sunny in person.

Seeing his unique and almost hypnotizing grey eyes, his perfect black hair, his cute little nose, his... oh... right, it's only one grey eye now.

Basil felt a bit bad, remembering how he hurt Sunny. How he ruined Sunny's life... even if he insisted otherwise. Basil was pretty convinced that if Sunny were to voice his actual opinion on what Basil did, it would probably end up making Sunny realize that he shouldn't keep being friends with Basil...

...or something like that.

Basil noticed that through all that thinking, he was on autopilot. He had eaten his whole breakfast and taken his medication. "Oh. Uh, thanks, Polly." Basil said, forgetting the flavour of the meal he just had.

"Don't forget to brush your teeth!" Polly reminded. Basil nodded, having almost forgotten. He ran back to the bathroom and began to brush his teeth.

Finishing up with that necessary task, it was finally time. Basil returned to the living room and began to put on his shoes. "It's still early, Basil. Are you sure you want to leave now?" Polly asked from the kitchen.

Basil nodded again, even though this time Polly couldn't see him, "Yeah, I have to make sure I'm there on time! Being early is fine, so long as I'm not late!"

Polly hummed a laugh from the kitchen as Basil donned his shoes and ran out the door. He shut the door behind him quickly and began to dash down the street, excited and determined to meet Sunny in time.

Then he slowed to a jog. Then a walk. He may have been determined, but he was no runner. He panted a bit, tired from the short burst of running.

"Phew... almost there." He said, walking up to the school at the end of his street. He felt thankful that the high school was so close to his house, unlike the elementary school. He always thought the bus was far too loud, and walking a distance like that would be hellish.

As Basil entered the parking lot, he saw Sunny leaving his mother's car. He looked the same way he always did. Adorable.

Of course, Basil tried not to admit such a thing, but his mind was made up. Sunny was adorable, and there was nothing he could do about it.

As Sunny's mother's car drove away, Basil began to run over to Sunny. Sunny turned around and faced Basil as he heard him running up behind him. "Sunny! Hey!" Basil excitedly shouted.

Sunny raised one hand in greeting. Basil smiled and asked Sunny, "Hi! How have you been?"

"My mom said I shouldn't talk to you anymore." Sunny answered the question... sort of.

It was a bit hard to discern what Sunny meant. "Um... oh... so does... does that mean you want me to stay away from you?"

"No." Sunny answered quickly. As brief of an answer as it was, Basil was still thankful for what it meant. It meant Sunny didn't hate him yet. It was better than nothing.

There was an awkward silence for a moment. Something Basil would have to get used to again, especially now that he was on ADHD medication. He wouldn't be able to blather on aimlessly like he used to, but Sunny would likely find that a blessing.

"So, um... do you... do you still have a crush on-" Basil began, posing a question he always used as a way to torture himself. The answer, however, was quite surprising to him.

Sunny spoke intensely and interrupted, "No." His voice was sharp, seemingly irritated.

"Are... did I say something wrong? I'm sorry. I'm really sorry, I didn't mean to make you angry." Basil nervously spoke, a bit afraid Sunny would somehow hate him out of nowhere for whatever he said wrong.

Of course, Sunny didn't hate him. Instead, he softly said, "It's okay." Sunny sounded apologetic, which honestly made Basil feel worse. He shouldn't feel bad for Basil's mistake. It wasn't Sunny's fault he asked such a stupid question.

Basil opened his mouth to speak, but the bell ringing stopped him. "Time to go in." commented Sunny. Basil walked with Sunny to the front doors and followed the crowd entering the school.
