You Said You Loved Me

You said you loved me
And I believed you
I believed every word you said
Like they were prophecies that came from the lord's head
I believed every word like a blanket that would tuck me in bed
You said you loved me
And I loved you

I love you more than any words I write could ever describe
I sat and I watched as you burned the trees
And ripped apart the breeze
Set fire to the peace
That was once mine
I loved you more than you ever loved me

You set me on fire
As I burned, I picked up the fuel
And doused me completely
I pulled the trigger
Because I sat and I watched as you pushed me to the floor
I let you
Even when I was covered in the 3rd degree burns
That you gave
I still stayed
I loved you more than you loved me

I believed in mythology
And the Greek gods once taught me
That love is one's greatest strength just as it's one's greatest weakness
I always though I knew what that meant
But it wasn't until I had you stuck deep within the depths of my head
Unable to free myself from your chains
That I finally knew what those words said

You said you loved me
And I believed you
To me the words you spoke were the gospel
Carried with great faith
Worshiped on one knee in front of the pews
Every day
I praised them
You said you loved me
It had to be true
Fathers don't lie
But I loved your more than you ever loved me

You were my first heartbreak
You said you loved me
But then you left me
Like I had never mattered to you
You stopped showing up
I was no longer a part of you
You said you loved me
I never thought it couldn't be true
I loved you more than you ever loved me

One night you left me
Just as easily as you once said, "I love you"
The words I grew up believing
Never mattered, were never true
From time to time you still say, "I love you"
But I gave up on you
The day you threw me out like I was an old pair of shoes.
