The rain pattered softly against the pavement as children hurried homeward, their raincoats and umbrellas offering scant protection from the elements. Mud splashed from passing cars, bringing delighted giggles from some of the kids. Meanwhile, the sun remained hidden behind a curtain of dark clouds, withholding its warm glow and casting the world into angsty darkness.

Among the group of children, Y/N stood apart, lost in thought, oblivious to the chatter swirling around her. Despite her classmates recognizing her withdrawn demeanor, they dared not broach the subject.

"Hey, Y/N," Winnie, one of her friends, called out, jogging up to her. Y/N turned her head, blinking away the mist from her eyes. Despite the rain distorting her vision, Winnie could still see the beauty of Y/N's azure eyes, which sparkled with a certain depth that set her apart from the crowd.

Winnie was drawn in by Y/N's captivating gaze, even amidst the rain and gloom. A small smile graced Y/N's lips as she regarded her friend.

"Yes?" Y/N replied, her pace slowing to allow Winnie to catch up. Her steps were unhurried, knowing her mother wouldn't be home, leaving her alone with the unwelcome presence of the man she despised.

"I was wondering if you wanted to come with me to church today? I know you're not into God, but I feel uncomfortable around my uncle," Winnie explained, her voice tinged with concern.

Y/N cut her off gently, placing a reassuring hand on Winnie's shoulder. As they reached her home, she spoke softly.

"I'll be there. Don't worry."

Entering her house, Y/N immediately kicked off her shoes, placing them on a newspaper she had laid out. She then removed her raincoat and socks, placing them neatly in a basket. The absence of her mother made her uneasy, realizing the man she loathed was likely inside.

Shrugging off the discomfort, Y/N picked up the basket and made her way to the bathroom, the sound of rain pounding against the windows adding to the somber atmosphere. The sky rumbled with distant thunder, echoing the turmoil within Y/N's heart as she walked through the dimly lit corridor. As she reached the bathroom, she set the basket down with a contented sigh, her damp hair falling loose from its tied-up ponytail. She glanced out the window, noticing the relentless rain continuing to pour.

Her mood lifted when a familiar meow sounded behind her. Turning around, she grinned as her ginger cat, Ddol Ddol, padded towards her. "Hey there, Ddol Ddol!" she cooed, scooping him up in her arms. She scratched behind his ears, eliciting a purr from the affectionate feline. Ddol Ddol pawed at her shoulder, clearly indicating his hunger. Y/N chuckled. "Alright, buddy, I'll feed you once I'm done soaking my clothes."
