Laughter

The sound of Kagome’s laughter normally brought about a sense of peace within him that he hadn’t felt since before his mother's passing. But not today. No, today the sound of her laughter was unpleasant and wearing his last nerve thin enough to snap.

It wasn't that she was doing anything wrong by laughing. Not really anyway. But the fact that the being causing her laughter was his hated half-brother wasn't something he could comprehend.

Really, what could that asshole have said that was so funny anyway? And why was she even walking next to him and talking to him in the first place?

It was bad enough that she took the prick home with her. Though, he tried to block that from his mind or else he would only piss himself off more. Just because the bastard had decided he wanted to follow his pack around, it didn't mean it was ok for him to get all friendly with them.

The brat clamoring for her attention, he could understand. Kagome had a weak spot for kids and would give the little urchin all the attention she craved in exchange for a smile.

It was one of her more irritating traits as far as he was concerned. None of the kids she cared so much about were actually hers, so her unnatural attachment to them was nothing but a nuisance. She wasted time, effort, and resources on any orphan that batted their eyes at her…

Hearing a new round of laughter coming from the untrained miko, his thoughts came to a screeching halt, and his last nerve finally snapped. Whipping around with a glare in his eye, Inuyasha crossed his arms and began tapping his foot demandingly. “Oi! What the hell is so funny back there?”

Covering her mouth trying to stop giggling, Kagome rolled her eyes and stopped walking. “It's nothing, Inuyasha. Why'd you stop? I thought we were in a hurry.”

The way she tilted her head to the side, feigning innocence like she didn't know what she was doing, was pissing the inu hanyou off. “We are! But you're back here galavanting with the bastard-”

“I'm not galavanting, I'm following you!” Kagome was shocked to hear Inuyasha say a four syllable word, even amazed because he pronounced it correctly. But her amazement quickly turned to annoyance when what he said clicked in her brain. “And where did you even learn that word?!”

“Keh! Quit flirting with this prick and hurry up!” Evading her question quickly because he didn't want her to know he sometimes studied her textbooks when she went home or was asleep, he continued his jealous triad instead. “We're supposed to be looking for jewel shards, and you're back here acting like you're starved for attention or something.”

“Inuyasha sit!” Face slamming hard into the ground with the force of her aggravation, Inuyasha groaned in pain. Kagome, however, simply stepped over him and glared down at his crumbled form.

Meanwhile, Miroku and Sango watched on with wide eyes as their young friend began to read the hanyou her version of the riot act. “He’ll never learn, will he?”

“Most likely not my dearest Sango. Come, let us follow Kagome-sama.” Dutifully, the monk and slayer followed behind Kagome, who was now, once again chatting with the western lord while the children followed behind on Ah-Un.

Eventually, the grumbling Inuyasha could be heard following behind at a distance.
