Avery's POV:

"Are you staying or is this just another pit stop?" My mom questioned with her arms folded, eyes staring up at me from below the stairs.

"Uh, no I decided to catch up on some schoolwork. I have a paper that's due tomorrow," I explained.

"Good, I noticed you've been spending quite some time with that Torres kid. Was beginning to worry that she was a distraction."

I rolled my eyes at her fake concerns, "you have nothing to worry about."

I closed my bedroom door and collapsed onto my bed, checking my phone to see if Oswin replied to any of my text messages.

Where is he?

Good luck with your paper.

If you ever need help, I'm here ;)

Read a text from Rowan. I smiled at her sweetness and replied in the same manner... well just a little sweeter. I liked the fact that we were on good terms and that there wasn't any uncertainty about how the other one felt. Our relationship has been anything but stable, but I honestly think that we're beginning to change that.

Liking Rowan wasn't something that I planned and it sure as hell wasn't something I expected but it feels right. She makes me want to be a better person and as much as I hate her annoying positivity it's the only thing that gets me through this shit show. The way we started was messy sure and it probably should've never happened... but it did. I knew what I was getting myself into it, but I walked in anyways. Because she's worth the mess and without her I'd probably be six feet under next to my sister.

Too dark?

I brushed off the thought and began working on my paper. I'd have to start now if I ever hoped to finish on time.

Campbell's POV:

"Hey how's the search going," Higgs question. "You know the captain is on everyone's asses. I'm just looking out for yours."

"Thanks Higgs but my ass is perfectly prim thank you."

"Oh, so you have a lead?"

"All the possible cars that it could be were either sold off for parts years ago or rusting in a dump," I explained flicking my pen across the desk.

"Looks like you're shit out of luck then," he chuckles.

My phone lit up with a notification:

Target located

Well, I'll be damned.

"Looks like my luck hasn't ran out after all," I smirked. Patting Higgs on the shoulder as I exited the precinct.

Rowan's POV:

There wasn't much on the agenda today. I thought maybe I could just stay in and catch up on some TV. After I got comfortable in my bed ready to start, a loud thud came from my window.

Was that a bird?

THUD!

Jesus! This time the sound was louder. Is someone trying to break in? I rushed over to my window and opened the curtain.

Is that?

I quickly went outside to confirm my suspicions. Below my window was a jack o lantern. The guts of it slid down my window slowly. I don't remember putting up Halloween decorations. I cautiously approached the carved-out pumpkin. There seemed to be a note inside. I retrieved the soiled note and opened it.
