I can't remember ever seeing Aurora this broken. We had left her parents' hotel room to go to hers, and she barely made it ten steps until she started crying.
"I'm so sorry," she mumbles as we reach her room. "So sorry."
I open the door and support her inside, "What are you sorry for?"
"My parents."
"Don't be sorry, Rora," I say. "They were just trying to pro–"
"No," she cuts me off. "They are trying to control me."
I carefully sit her down on the bed and walk to the bathroom to grab a wet towel for her tear-streaked face. With a few gentle pads, I clean the tears. The coldness calms her down a bit.
"Nurse Jesslyn has tried to call you, and since she couldn't reach you, she called me. She didn't even tell me about the miscarriage."
"Do you think we should call her?"
"Yeah," I nod. "When you are ready, we can call her. The other driver is awake, too. We'll have to schedule an appointment with our lawyer soon."
"Even if I can't remember anything?"
"Your amnesia is our biggest gain right now. Because he did that."
Aurora shifts slightly on the bed, pulling the blankets snugly around her. She gazes at me, her eyes still glistening, "Lando," she murmurs softly. "Can you... can you come closer?"
I nod immediately and move to sit next to her. She pulls the blankets up, and I sit next to her.
"You'll let me know what you want to call, right?" I ask.
"Yes, I will tell you," she replies while staring blankly at the wall. She is so lost in her thoughts that the silence feels comfortable. I recognize the troubled look in her eyes, but I can do nothing to comfort her.
After what feels like an eternity, she speaks again. "Lando, can... Can I kiss you?" she asks, her voice barely above a whisper.
I hesitate momentarily, and my heart skips a beat at her words. I want to kiss her so badly, but I also don't want to make things more complicated. But as I look into her eyes, which are filled with so much pain and confusion, all I can do is lean in.
Her breath is warm on my lips; there's a moment of hesitation. But it isn't as if this is our first kiss after the accident; we also had one in the hot air balloon. So, our lips meet, and it's like a floodgate opens.
