7. A chat with Dumbledore

Dumbledore's office was a large circular room full of rare and unusual magical artefacts. Portraits of previous headmasters and mistresses on the walls watched over Dumbledore's work.

Dumbledore was sitting on his chair, his desk in front of him. Professor McGonagall and another -rather chubby man- were standing next to them.

Dumbledore looked up from his work and smiled  at us, his eyes twinkling as usual. He stood up and patted a phoenix on its head.

"Marvelous isn't he?" he asked without turning to us.

"Yes, he definitely is," Hazel said. She stepped up next to Dumbledore and patted the phoenix on its head. The phoenix ruffled his feathers and Hazel giggled.

"Well, demigods, I have a few things to tell you." Dumbledore turned to us.

"What did you call us?" Annabeth asked. She tried to look clueless. This was Chiron's warning, to not show our true selves until it is said.

"Child, you do not have to hide your identities in the presence of Professor McGonagall, Professor Slughorn and myself."

"How did you contact Chiron?" Jason asked.

Dumbledore opens his drawer and pulls out a necklace with a circular pendant, "See this?"

We nodded.

"This is a time tuner. It helps me travel through time. I was mainly trying to go back, but I made a mistake and it took me five years into the future. October 31st 1981."

"Travel in time?" Percy asked. "How could someone or something that is not Kronos control time?"

"How do you think you travelled from 2010 to now? Using this time tuner of course. Anyway, I was able to reach Chiron because he was here with the rest of the centaurs a few days ago. I overheard him talk about you, and I thought that you would make good fighters and disguises for the marauders.

"Here is what I saw on October 31st 1981. I won't tell you exactly what happened but I will sum it up. All of the marauders including Ms Evans, Ms McKinnon and Ms McDonald will suffer for the rest of their lives from Peter Pettigrew. And now your job is to be as close as possible to them. Try to let Peter Pettigrew out. Follow him. Find out what he is after."

"Don't you think it is... cruel to break friendships? I mean_" Frank doesn't finish his sentence because Dumbledore interrupts him.

"Mr Zhang I know how cruel it is. But it is for the good and safety of the rest. Trust me."

I got the sudden feeling that I didn't trust Dumbledore. If it were Chiron I would've trusted him.

"I've contacted Professor McGonagall and Professor Slughorn because they are closest to the students. Professor Slughorn here is very close to Ms Evans and Mr Lupin. It would be very good if allow any of them to enter your Slug club, Professor."

"I would be delighted to have any of them in my club, headmaster," Slughorn answered.

"Professor McGonagall here is very close to Mr Potter and Mr Black. She is, as they call her, their Minnie," at this Dumbledore grins a wide grin and McGonagall glares at him.

"If you don't mind, please do not call me that. It is enough that James and Sirius do it all the time. Those two are insufferable. Albus, you don't pay me enough for this." she complained.

"Now is not the time, Minerva" he turned to us, "now go to your common room. Rest you will have five years of magical education to catch up on tomorrow."

On our way back to the common room it was very quiet. We were all deep in thought. This didn't seem good or easy. But what other choice do we have?

"Hey do any of you actually know the way back?" Piper asked.

"I thought Annabeth knew the way," said Leo.

"Me? Why me?"

"Cause you always act so smart and genius I thought you'd know"

"Well I don't-"

"Well well welllllll!! What do we have here? Peevsy has found the lost new students!!!" A voice cackled behind us. I turned around my hand automatically reaching for my sword necklace. I saw a ghost with a clown coming (floating?) over to us.

"Who are you?" I asked.

"I am Peeves! The poltergeist here at Hogwarts! Peevsy was just about to ruin a classroom when he heard you were lost! Peevsy decided that he wanted to help you!"

"No thank-"

"Sure!" Leo said.

"And what is your name?"

"Leo Valdez,"

"Peeves leave the new students alone!" Remus' voice said.

Peeves made a pirouette in the air," Loony Loopy Lupin!!!!!"

"Peeves, leave the students alone or I will call the baron!"

I don't know if ghosts could go pale, but Peeves looked like he did. He silently floated away.

"Bloody ghost," Remus muttered, "I am Remus by the way. Gryffindor prefect. Lily was looking for you too. Because you don't know the password to the common room,"

At the same time Lily appeared from a corner and walked up to us breathless, "There you are! I've been looking everywhere for you!"

We walked back together to Gryffindor common room. The girls with Lily and the boys with Remus.
Lily, Piper and Annabeth became close really quick. I noticed Hazel's face was a bit down.

"Hey, you ok?" I asked.

She looked up startled at me but she nodded.

"You don't seem okay," I pointed out.

"It's just... today was the day ,I am not sure how many years ago, I last saw Sammy. You know?"

Sammy Valdez. Leo's Grandfather and her best friend. (It's hard to imagine that Hazel almost became Leo's Grandmother.) Leo told me about him and his history with Hazel. I knew Hazel had feelings for Sammy.

I put a reassuring hand on her shoulder and gave her a warm smile.

"I'm here if you ever wanna talk about it."

She smiled at me," Thanks"

Lily suddenly stopped in front of a portrait that I almost bumped into her.

"Here we are!" She announced

"Where is 'here'?" Leo asked.

"Gryffindor common room of course! Remus, would you do the honor at say the password?"

Remus nodded and stepped towards the portrait. It was a portrait of a fat lady holding a glass cup.

"Password," the lady said. I gasped at her.

"That's a talking portrait!" Percy gasped.

"Don't they all?" Remus answered. He turned to the portrait again," Fortuna Major,"

The lady made a hand gesture that indicated that we could enter and the portrait swung open.
