If asked, Damian couldn't explain why he didn't just leave Nkechinyere alone, delete her number, and vanish forever. He couldn't answer it in a way anyone, including himself, would understand.
He wasn't swayed by charm or allure, nor was there any supernatural rationale for his reluctance to disappear from her life.
He could make up a story about fearing exposure of their identities, but deep down, Damian knew she wouldn't do that. It hung in the tangles of her hair and the way her voice sounded in his ears.
The truth was simple: he didn't want to leave. The mere thought weighed on him, as if he had to drag his bones away from her presence. ( He would later come to understand he had a crush. That this weight on his chest was nothing more than affection for the girl. )
He texts her first.
