If Yoongi had been smart, he would have thrown Jimin's phone away and ripped off his shirt to reveal his soulmark. But Yoongi was an idiot, and he let Jimin walk away from him, heart in his mouth as the boy he loved left him for someone else.

But it was what he wanted, he told himself. He knew that he and Jimin were an impossibility, and this was just fate finally catching on. Yoongi's soulmark wasn't real. Someone else was tethered to sweet Jimin and that person was the only one who could make him happy. So he let him leave, despite the uncertainty etched into his delicate features, and the tears shining in his eyes.

"Go," Jimin, he'd said. "If you need to, go."

And so Jimin left.

And so Yoongi cried.

And so the moon laughed.

From then on, Jimin and Yoongi tried their best to be as cordial as possible, which for Yoongi, meant only nodding hello whenever Jimin was around and never uttering a word to him after. Even when they had to present their group project finally, Yoongi only ever grunted in response to Jimin's questions, occasionally clarifying if that grunt was an affirmative or a negative, and then promptly retreating back into silence.

At least now however, whenever Jungkook asked Jimin over, Yoongi didn't run away. He was quiet, but he was present. Jimin grew used to his silent presence and after a week, Yoongi felt like a permanent fixture in his life.

To Jimin, Yoongi was still enigmatic and scary, but now he was also shy and soft and sweet.

He'd been shocked to find out that he wasn't his soulmate but at least he didn't have to fight with his emotions anymore. He'd just have to get over them.

Unlike before, for Yoongi, there was no real danger of Jimin finding out what wasn't true. It was terribly masochistic of him but being able to see Jimin more freely had made it easier to endure the fact that he would never truly be his.

And Yoongi, well Yoongi was heartbroken but he couldn't stay away. Despite the confirmation that this was all a cosmic joke, he knew that his dad's enemies had Jimin on their radar already and there would be no convincing them to stay away. He had a mission and that was to do everything he could to protect Park Jimin, no matter how much it fucking hurt. No matter if it killed him.

So when Jungkook came to him one night, pouting and asking for a favor, Yoongi couldn't resist the opportunity to be closer to Jimin.

It was maybe a week after everything had happened and Jungkook had finally come out of hiding. He'd claimed to be sick the whole time but Yoongi knew better. He'd been there—he'd also recovered incredibly quickly after Jimin's kiss (but he couldn't think of that now). He knew something had happened between Taehyung and Jungkook.

"I broke up with him," Jungkook had sobbed lightly in Yoongi's arms. "Well, not really because we were never really together, were we? But I told him that I didn't wanna hang out anymore."

Yoongi held in his gasp and tried to let Jungkook finish talking.

"He looked me dead in the eye and nodded. He just nodded and walked away."

"Why did you let him?" Yoongi asked, but he knew the answer. Sometimes, it was safer to let them leave.

"I wanted to know if I meant anything at all to him. I got my answer."

Yoongi watched as Jungkook's jaw tightened his face hardening into a steely mask and he was frightened. The light in his brother's eyes was dimming and there was nothing he could do about it now.
