Maybe it was for the best that Jimin had rejected his invitation to lunch. Yoongi wasn't sure why he'd done it, but instinct had driven him to stay near.

After he found out everything about his father, he'd refused to accept the truth that lingered like smoke in his lungs as it fought to leave his lips, but slowly, as the days drew out ever longer behind those rusted cell door bars, Yoongi had nothing but time to think. He'd given in to his dreams of Jimin, embraced the love he had for the beautiful boy with the soft voice that was the only lifeline he had in that dark and cold prison.

He'd said it out loud once.

"I love you Jimin." It was barely above a whisper, but it turned tangible in the shape of his cold breath.

He loved Jimin. He would love only Jimin all his life, no matter how much time he had left. It was the most painful and beautiful thing that had ever happened to him.

It was the worst and loveliest torment.

But, maybe it was for the best that Jimin had told him to stay away.

Yoongi shared a soulmate mark with Jimin, that much was true.

Yoongi and Jimin were soulmates, that much he could accept.

But Yoongi and Jimin weren't fated. That had been a jagged knife to his heart because once he'd accepted the truth, all he longed to do was go to Jimin and confess and beg him to understand.

But Yoongi was nothing if not ashamed. He'd seen Jimin around campus and he'd been so swallowed up by his own shame about what had happened the last few years, that he didn't have the courage to face him.

The first time he'd seen him, he had been alone. He'd looked even more beautiful than Yoongi remembered him. His hair was a soft golden halo around him; his face was more mature, sharper. Everything about him was sleek and strong and Yoongi realized he'd done so well for himself alone.

The next time he saw him however, Yoongi realized he wasn't alone. He'd known the chances of Hyungsik being with Jimin were impossibly high but still, a spark of hope had nested in his heart until it was extinguished when he saw Hyungsik lean down and kiss Jimin one day after class. Yoongi had hidden from both of them before they caught him.

Of course Hyungsik knew he was there. They had classes together, but never once had he acknowledged him. It was as if Yoongi didn't even exist.

And perhaps, he shouldn't have existed. At least not as the second soulmate. Or perhaps it had been a matter of who fate allowed to reach Jimin first. Maybe Yoongi could have argued and convinced himself that he had found him first. That Jimin had chosen him once. But fate had also dealt Yoongi a bad hand letting him believe a damning lie for years and years. Now, all he could do was wish the best for Jimin. All he could do was guard this secret.

Had Jimin accepted his invitation, maybe Yoongi would have let it slip, selfishly telling him the truth about the mark that bound them. Jimin didn't deserve that, though. He deserved the peace that Yoongi only seemed to rob him of. He deserved to be left alone to be happy with Hyungsik.

And if Yoongi was made for anything, it was to make Park Jimin happy.
