Jimin woke up with a start.

It was still dark out and the spot next to him was empty and cold. For a second he couldn't remember where he was until the familiar earthy scent that followed Yoongi hit him as he dug his face into the pillow. Jimin wasn't home. He was in Yoongi's bed.

He sat up and scanned the room quickly for any sign of him finding nothing but darkness the the unfamiliar silhouettes within Yoongi's room. Outside the window, he heard muffled yelling and crawled across the bed to peek outside. There was Yoongi, back to Jimin, but unmistakable. He wasn't alone though. Two men were there and it was obvious that they were having an argument. Yoongi pushed one of them and the guy swung at him but Yoongi was too quick. Before Jimin could run outside and try to help in some way, the other guy got between them and stopped the fight.

They said something else to Yoongi and he just shook his head. His fists were balled up and Jimin could tell he was livid but the two men didn't say more. They left him there and he watched them go. Jimin stayed at the window until he saw Yoongi turn around and quickly got back into bed. It didn't take Yoongi long for him to come back into the room, steps heavy on the hardwood floor. Jimin's eyes were shut tight, but he could hear Yoongi rustle about until finally, he felt the bed dip next to him and Yoongi's warmth envelop him as he laid down. He didn't reach out to him now and Jimin didn't turn around. He was still exhausted, so he let sleep wash over him like warm water until he drifted off back to sleep.

The next time Jimin woke up, there was a loud incessant banging on the door.

He jolted up just as Yoongi did. The banging stopped and they could hear people just outside the bedroom and what sounded like the thumping of boots. The door to Yoongi's room door swung open and in came around six or seven cops dressed in their black uniforms, guns at their hips, looking fiercely determined. Yoongi's step mother looked tiny in comparison behind them as she tried to tell them to get out of her house. They ignored her completely.

"Are you Min Yoongi?"

Yoongi nodded, looking more confused than scared and Jimin wished he could take some of his calm and infuse it into himself because right now he felt like his heart was going to beat itself into a heart attack.

"Where were you last night around three in the morning."

"Here. Sleeping." He looked over to Jimin who nodded.

"He was. He was with me."

One of the officers looked at Jimin as if he had just noticed him there. "I wouldn't stick my neck out for this guy, if I were you, kid."

"It's true."

"Are you willing to testify in court for him?"

Jimin frowned. What the hell did that mean?

"What do you want?" Yoongi demanded.

"Boss," one of the cops that had gone into Yoongi's room, roaming around and looking at everything held up a pair of black muddied boots.

"Are these yours?" The one in front of them asked, but he already knew the answer. Yoongi said nothing.

"You're going to have to come with us."

"Wait!" Jimin reached out and pulled Yoongi away from the cops, but their grip was stronger as they pulled and shoved Yoongi into the living room.

"Where are you taking him!" Jimin yelled as Yoongi's step mother ran after them.

"To identify a body," the officer yelled over his shoulder and with the snap of the door shutting, Jimin was left all alone.

Yoongi stood in the center of the clinically white room, bright fluorescent lights beaming down on him, as he waited for the attendant at the singular desk to tell him what to do.

She looked over at him from under her thick glasses and then clicked away at her computer. He stared ahead, at the silver door that held behind it both relief and pain. Fear and wishful thinking.

"Okay," she said simply and Yoongi walked forward.

"Place your hand on the scanner."

Yoongi reached out and put his palm on the scanner that would open the door to the morgue. If it opened, then his father was definitely in there. It only opened for family members related by blood, soulmates, or spouses when they weren't soulmates.

His step mother had been too distraught to do it, but she waited just outside in the hallway. Jungkook couldn't be reached but Yoongi was grateful. He didn't want him to know what was going on.

There was a loud beep but the door didn't open.

"It's not a match," the lady said and Yoongi looked over at her heart in his throat.

He wasn't sure what emotion washed over him in that moment—was it relief or disappointment?

"Bring your mom in."

"Why?"

She didn't answer and he didn't move.

She rolled her eyes and pressed a button on her desk. "Jae, bring in the wife. Boss said to try them both."

The door behind Yoongi opened with a clank and in came 'Jae' with his step mother in tow. She was shaking from head to toe and Yoongi reached out a hand to comfort her. She latched onto him and held tight.

"I'm so sorry," she whispered, but he couldn't understand why.

"Put your hand on the scanner," the lady at the desk said and Sohee looked up at Yoongi. There was a look of abject fear in her eyes that Yoongi couldn't understand. Her husband wasn't behind that door. He couldn't be because Yoongi had already tried it.

"It's okay, he reassured her confidently. "Go ahead." Prove how stupid they are.

She walked forward, still clutching onto Yoongi and he helped her move. She took a trembling hand and laid it on the scanner which immediately lit up green and the door swung open.

Yoongi looked at Sohee but she wouldn't meet his eyes.

"I don't understand..."

"You're not related," the cop said behind them, but it sounded like a realization.

Yoongi turned to Sohee. There were tears in her eyes and her lip trembled as she spoke, still not looking at him.

"He's not your dad," she confessed and Yoongi felt the wind knock out of him.
