The next morning I awoke to the sounds of people talking in hushed tones outside my door. I got up and stretched before walking towards the door to hear what they were saying.
"She could be lying, how can we trust her?" Donna's voice was calm but quiet.
A deeper voice spoke up after her, "I talked to her yesterday for a couple of minutes. She seems genuinely afraid and lost. I don't think she's lying." Dick's voice made me melt. Gosh, what a great guy.
Donna scoffed. "Grayson, you are easily swayed by a pretty face. I can't exactly trust your word on this." Aw, she thinks I'm pretty!
"Donna's right Dick. When it comes to a supposed damsel in distress you tend to ignore any red flags." A voice I didn't recognize added into the conversation. "Look at what happened with Blackfire. Even after Kori told you she was evil, you still took her in."
"Blackfire was a one time mistake Roy, I won't let it happen again." Dick's voice was stern, a fierce reminder that he was a leader.
"I'm just saying." I could imagine Roy's hands up in surrender. "You're irrational when it comes to women."
"I say we lasso her, see if she's telling the truth." Donna interjected. A shiver went down my spine. From what I read, the lasso of truth compels whoever touches it not to utter a lie. And as someone who has built her entire existence on lies, It makes me uneasy.
"If it'll make you all feel better, I'll ask her if she doesn't mind being lassoed." Dick sighed.
"Don't tell her what the lasso does." Donna said. Dick chuckled.
"She knows everything about us from the comics she reads in her universe. Do you really think she doesn't know about the lasso?" He grabbed the handle for the door and that's when I decided to rush back into bed and act like I just got up.
As soon as the blanket was around my torso, the door opened. I faked a yawn and rubbed my eyes.
"Oh, good morning." I smiled at the three in front of me.
Dick grinned at me. "You ease dropped didn't you?"
My face fell. Am I that easy to read? "Yeah. Sorry."
"It's okay Angela. So you know why we're here then?" Donna spoke up. I nodded and eyed the rope tied around her waist.
"I'll do whatever it takes to get you guys to trust me, and make sure I get home." I got out of bed and walked over to where they stood. I held out my hands for Donna, so she could place the end of the lasso on them. It glowed brightly in my palms, a warm heat was emitted from the rope.
"First question, how did you get here?" She asked.
It was like the words were crawling out of my throat without my permission. I couldn't stop them from tumbling out of my mouth. "I fell asleep in my dorm room reading a comic book and the next thing I knew I was falling from the sky. I have no idea how it happened."
Donna nodded then continued, "How do you know all of our names? And our identities?"
"I read about you all the time. Since I was in middle school. Your stories are etched into my brain." I answered truthfully.
"Do you wish us any harm?" Her voice got low and sharp.
"No. I just want to go home." The room got silent after that. Donna stood up a bit straighter and took the rope out of my hands.
"Good. We just needed to be sure."
"I understand. I wouldn't trust me either. I mean, I literally fell from the sky." I smiled softly at her. She returned it back. Roy cleared his throat bringing our attention over to him.
He held out his hand for me to shake. "I feel like I should introduce myself. My name is Ro-"
I interrupted him, "I know who you are. You're Roy Harper. Speedy. Protege of the Green Arrow." He stared at me in shock. I bashfully scratched the back of my head. "Sorry, big fan."
"It's uh... it's fine." He murmured under his breath. I had a feeling it wasn't fine but he wanted to save face in front of his friends.
"You've been in these clothes for a while, I have some things you could wear and a bathroom you could wash up in." Donna led me towards the door while the two men followed closely behind us.
"Oh, that would be great." I was desperate to get out of this outfit. It was sort of revealing, the shorts barely covered anything and the shirt was big and baggy but not big enough to really make me feel secure. I think I didn't really notice last night, because of all the adrenaline. But now I was starting to feel self conscious.
I'm not ashamed of my body in the slightest. I think I look great, 10 years of competitive cheer and going to the gym every other week will do that to you. But, for some reason I was nervous about what Dick thought of me.
I took a peek at the vigilante behind me. He was deep in conversation with Roy about something important guessing by the crease on his forehead. I ran my eyes up and down his body. Gosh, what a gorgeous man. He was so buff, his arms were bulging out of his compression shirt making me drool. His pants hugged his legs just right. His hair was swept in a way that made it look like he just woke up, but it wasn't messy. He was better in person than in any drawing. I turned back around before he caught me shamelessly checking him out.
"This is the girl's bathroom, I have soap in there you can use. Shampoo too if you need it." Donna gestured towards a door to my right. "I'll bring you some clothes later that I hope will fit you. You're a bit shorter than me, but I'm sure it'll be fine."
I looked up to the Amazon and nodded in understanding. I'm not short or anything, I'm 5'7. But Donna towered over me at around 5'10-5'11. Her clothes would probably be a baggy fit but still doable.
"Thanks, I appreciate it." I was desperate to shower. I walked into the bathroom and got to work scrubbing. I showered and washed my hair for like an hour before I finally got out. Donna left me a fluffy towel, a brand new tooth brush and some clothes. I dried myself off and brushed my teeth. Then I put on the clothes.
She gave me a black hoodie that ended up being a bit oversized on me, and some black biker shorts. I fluffed out my hair a bit. It looks cute now that it's wet, but as soon as it dries it'll be a curly mess. And without my hair products I won't be able to tame it. So I opted to braid it down in two french braids.
Walking out of the bathroom I was met with Dick leaning on the wall across from the bathroom. "Were you waiting for me?"
"Would you be mad if I was?" His lips cocked up into a smirk. Was he flirting? I could flirt, it's one of the only things I was pretty good at.
"No, not really." I tucked a loose piece of hair behind my ear as I walked up to him. "What's up? Did you figure out a way to get me home?"
"Not yet unfortunately. Just waiting for you to come out so I could introduce you to everybody." He got off the wall and walked a bit closer to me.
"It's gonna feel weird meeting the people I've read about for so long." I held my hands in front of myself and rocked back and forth on my heels.
"They're all nice." His eyes searched my face.
"I know. Still weird. It's like meeting your favorite celebrities."
He leaned in close and whispered, "Am I your favorite?"
I shrugged nonchalantly, "Maybe. Do you want to be my favorite?"
"I wouldn't mind it." He tugged on the end of my hoodie string. "C'mon they're all waiting."
I followed closely behind him as he led me through the base until we ended up at some double doors.
Dick turned to me quickly behind opening the doors. I almost bumped into him but he steadied me before I crashed into his chest.
"What's wrong?" I asked him. He let go of my arms and scratched the back of his head.
"Warning you. They can be a bit, much." He turned back around and sighed heavily before opening the door. "Angela, meet everyone."
