We got to Dick's place not too long after. I told Zahra to go with the Titans back to the tower, where she would be safer. She really didn't want to part from me, but I just needed to know she was safe and sound. And with me, she would never be.
Donna came with me and Dick to his place. Everyone else went back to the Tower. I couldn't bear to look at them when I got into Dick's car. And even when we drove off, my eyes stayed glued to the floor.
The car ride was mostly silent. The only sound to fill the space was my soft crying and sniffles. I felt awful; I couldn't believe people got hurt tonight because of me.
We pulled into an apartment complex and we all shuffled out of the car. We walked inside and Dick opened his door for us. "Welcome to my house," he muttered, tiredly.
He collapsed on the couch, still gripping his side. "The guest room is on the right in the back. And my room is across the hall from it. Donna, you can take my room, Angela, you can stay in the guest room."
"What about you?" I asked quietly.
"I sleep on this couch most days anyway. So I'll stay out here for now." He smiled softly at me. My eyes started to well up with more tears. Just great, first my supposed father hurts the dude, then I force him to sleep on a couch while injured.
"I'll call Zatanna, maybe when she's done healing the others she will be able to heal you too," Donna said.
"I wish I could help. If I was more powerful, I'd probably be able to pop a healing potion or something out of thin air." I sighed. Then, on his coffee table, a clear bottle with a sparkly blue liquid appeared out of nowhere. We all jumped backwards in shock.
"What the fuck," I whispered. Dick leaned in closer and picked up the bottle.
"It says 'Healing Potion' on it." He furrowed his eyebrows in confusion.
"Did I do that? Did I conjure up a potion from thin air?" I looked around the room for more ideas on things to conjure up. Then a thought popped into my head. "I wish I had a debit card that had a million dollars on it."
I held out my hands and we all waited with bated breath for something to appear. Nothing happened.
"So that wasn't me?" I frowned.
"No, that was me," a cheerful voice rang out in my head. We all screamed in terror.
"What was that?!" Donna yelled.
Then Mr. Mxyzptlk popped up right in front of my face. I screamed again and tried to punch him, but he was gone the next instant. Donna took out the lasso and started swinging it everywhere he popped up in the room. Dick, still clutching his side, rushed over to me and shielded me away from the 5th dimensional imp.
"Don't worry! I'm not here to hurt you guys. I just wanted to finally talk to my daughter!" He laughed as he dodged every attack from Donna. "I even sent the healing potion as an olive branch!"
"You threw me into a building!" Dick yelled, still protecting me.
"Oops!" Mr. Mxyzptlk said, dodging another attempt with the rope. "Alright, I'm getting tired of this."
He waved his hand and Donna was frozen in place. The rope limply dropped to the ground. Her eyes widened as she tried to move her body. Her muffled yells of anger filled the room. Dick tried to reach for a baton but was too late.
"You too, lover boy." Mr. Mxyzptlk waved his hand again, freezing Dick in place. Mr. Mxyzptlk then shoved the frozen man out of the way and came face to face with me. "Ahh finally. Now we can talk."
"What do you want?" I asked, my voice shaky.
"To see you, of course, my darling. You know, a father's love knows no bounds." He laughed. "Oh, I've missed you, my dear sweet Angel. You're probably my best creation."
"What? I'm confused, how can you be my father? You're not real." I eyed the coffee table behind him and slowly lifted my hand up without him noticing.
"None of us are real, darling. We're from a comic book," He motioned between the three of them. "And you're a character in a fanfiction that was first written by a college grad when she was 15. That doesn't matter! None of that changes the fact that you are my daughter! My magnum opus!"
"Fan fiction? What are you talking about?" I slowly lifted the table; it was hard since I had to concentrate on the conversation and magic.
"21 years ago, I had gotten bored of being alone. Yes, popping into here once in a while bothering these guys was fun. But I just knew it would be more fun with someone at my side. So, I created you." He bopped my nose. "I traveled to your dimension one day and saw your mother. I thought she was good enough, so I modeled you after me and her and placed you into her stomach. We then dated for a bit, I had to. It would bring too much attention to you if your mother was suddenly pregnant, as if she was the Virgin Mary or something!"
"What the fuck-"
"It's rude to interrupt, dear! Anyway, I had no idea that your world also had its own sort of magical guardian. And when he found out I was pretending to be a human and courting your mother, he banished me back here! And blocked me from ever going back!" He yelled. The fury in his eyes was ablaze with hatred for whoever the wizard in my world was.
"Ehem, anyway!" He cheered up. "I knew one day you'd come back to me. You had to. You had my magic inside you and it was going to leak out eventually. So I wasn't surprised when you dropped in here all those weeks ago."
"I let you hang out here and make nice with the locals. You know, to get your footing. But now I want you back. I want you to join me at my side. Your rightful place is next to me. It's the whole reason you were created, after all."
"That's so fucked up," I whispered.
"How? If you were lonely, wouldn't you also make yourself a friend?"
"You didn't make a friend! You made a child!"
"A child is better than a friend. They have to love you no matter what." He stated.
Dick started chuckling from his frozen state next to me after that sentence.
"Shut up, Grayson! Go to your room!" Mr. Mxyzptlk snapped his fingers and Dick disappeared.
"What did you do to him?" I yelled. The table was almost close enough.
"Don't worry, your boyfriend is fine. I sent him into his room like I said. I won't hurt him. Otherwise, you'd never agree to join me; you're fond of this one. Even in the other dimension, you were fond of him. I personally don't understand it. I see more appeal in Supers myself. I would've been fine if you went for Conner or Mon-el. But a Bat?" He sighed and shook his head. "I guess it's natural for a father to hate his daughter's boyfriends."
"You're not my father!" I yelled as I finally was able to swing the table at him. It crashed into his back, but he still floated there, unfazed.
"That was unnecessary. We were having a good conversation."
"I don't trust you. Or like you!"
He clenched his chest and gasped. "Good heavens! Is that how you talk to your father?"
"Go away!" I started flinging any item I could see at him. Chairs, cups, pillows, nothing worked. How could I be his daughter if my magic was this weak?
"Is this all you can do? Hm, I guess your powers haven't been fully unlocked yet. Don't worry, over time they will get stronger. It'll take a while, but we have time. I'll be back again once you've learned to use everything you have. Then, we will be together again." He smiled at me.
"Go to hell." I threw a punch at his face, but he disappeared in a cloud of smoke, leaving nothing behind but the sounds of his maniacal laughter. Donna fell to the floor, finally unfrozen, and Dick ran in from the hallway. I guess Mr. Mxyzptlk really did put him in his room.
"What happened?" Dick said.
"He told Angela he'll be back for her once she unlocked more of her powers. He's going to try and take her with him," Donna explained. I was grateful for her; I don't think I could've uttered a single word. "Dick, this is going way beyond what we imagined. What do we do?"
Dick looked tired and exasperated, "We have to talk to Bruce."
