The Ball

I couldn't get an opportunity to ask in the car so when we got to our room, I stepped in front of him and just stared at him. He stared right back with darkened eyes.

"Wh-What's wrong?" That seemed to snap him out of it as his eyes returned back to their original, sparkling, yellow color.

"I just feel weird. I'm sure it's nothing a little sleep wouldn't fix," he said but my concern remained as I grabbed his hand and kissed the palm.

"O-Ok, but you n-need to tell m-me immediately if y-you feel worse, o-ok?" I said and he nodded before giving me a kiss on the forehead.

He went to the bathroom and I went to the walk-in closet. I changed into my pajamas before getting into bed.

My eyes felt droopy as soon as my head hit the pillow and I yawned.

My eyes kept closing as I fought to keep them open and the sound of the shower only made it worse.

Finally, Ethan came out fully dressed in his nightwear and got into bed next to me.

I lifted my head but saw that he had turned the other way so I just lowered my head with a pout.

I faced his back and just stared at the back of his head as his body heaved up and down with each breathe. My eyes slowly closed at their own accord and I fell asleep.

***

I was running, running and running. That was all I could do; run. I kept running so they won't reach me. I knew they would find me sooner or later but I didn't want to give up. I wanted to put up a fight even if it was the last thing I did.

I bumped into someone familiar and started asking for help, but I couldn't form a proper sentence.

I could feel them creeping closer. They were dark, scary and super close now. I needed to do something. I couldn't die now.

I shot up, covered in sweat as my alarm blared right next to my ear.

'Ugh, I hate this. I couldn't sleep a wink,'

'Whatever,' Liz said and yawned.

I touched the bed where Ethan was supposed to be and found it cold. His scent lingered in the air from atleast half an hour ago.

I sighed. Something was definitely up with him but I wouldn't be able to help if he wouldn't tell me what it was.

I sighed, again and pulled my self out of bed, onto the cool floor.

I chose some clothes before taking a shower and brushing my teeth and hair. I looked at my reflection and didn't recoil after seeing it for the first time in forever.

I was positively glowing and the mark on my neck was prominent. It was like a tattoo of a wolf howling at the moon.

I went to the downstairs kitchen after getting dressed and found Vanessa, Drake and some other people but Ethan wasn't one of them.

I put some food on a plate and sat at the island, next to Vanessa. She smiled at me before going back to bickering with Drake who greeted me earlier.

I ate as much as I could with the nerves occupying almost half of my stomach and looked at Vanessa.

"L-Let's go," I said and she nodded before getting up. I got up as well and we both went to our usual training spot.

"H-Haven't you been p-pushing me too h-hard these days?" I said as I took the dress out and layed it out on the bed.

"Yeah, so you can get stronger a little faster," Vanessa said from her spot on the bed, texting somebody and I nodded.

"So, h-how are we g-gonna go about th-this?" I said as I admired the perfect dress sprawled out onto the bed and Vanessa got up.

"Go and take a shower," she said, pointing towards the bathroom and used the other hand to straighten out her own dress, "and I will bring all the supplies we need."

She almost ran out of the room and I shook my head before doing as I was told.

Vanessa was wearing a purple pencil dress which was kinda flowy and didn't have sleeves.

After a short shower, I put on a hoodie and jeans and came out to see Vanessa plugging in a device that looked like tongs.

She turned her attention to me, her eyes roaming my body as she eyed my clothes but didn't say anything.

"Sit," she said and I complied.

She did all sorts of things to my face and hair and as it turned out, those tongs were actually a hair straightener.

"A-All done," I said and came out of the closet with my dress flowing down to my ankles.

"Beautiful, simply beautiful," she said as she wiped a non-existent tear.

I looked at myself in the mirror and was left speechless. Was that...really me...?

Was I always this pretty?

'Nope, it's because of Vanessa's skills,' there she was; Liz, giving her opinion even though it wasn't needed.

'Whatever,'

"I-I look s-stunning. You d-did a great j-job, Vanessa," I said but I couldn't tear my eyes away from my reflection.

"Thank you," she smiled which I returned from the mirror.

Right then, there was a light knock.

"Luna, it's time to go," it was Drake's voice and Vanessa opened the door.

"Ok, we're ready," all three of us walked down and to the LIMOUSINE waiting for us just outside the front door.

With each step closer to the LIMOUSINE, I felt the knots in my stomach get tighter and I felt like vomiting.

I hoped Ethan would be here and he would help me get ready. Don't get me wrong, having Vanessa really helped calm me down and I will be forever grateful, but he was my mate. He should've been there.

I needed to stop thinking and just focus on the fact that I would see him in a few minutes.

We reached the clearing and I got out of the limousine. I could smell many people gathered a little further away from us.

I focused on the sounds of crickets chirping and frogs ribbit. In the background, you could distinctly hear a woman speaking. Even her voice sounded graceful.

She must've been Ethan's mother. The former Luna. That alone made my heart hammer. It was our first meeting and I wanted her to like me.

Ethan liked her, so I desperately wanted her approval. I didn't wanna disappoint as I had been  my entire life.

"Here, Luna," I didn't even realize that we had reached where I was to stand and wait until my name was announced.

My eyes found Ethan's and for the time being, all my anger towards him disappeared. He smiled at me which I returned to the best of my abilities.

Waiting was bound to make me more anxious but as I gazed into Ethan's yellow eyes, sparkling in the light from the various bulbs, it felt like everything else in the world disappeared. It was just us, in our own little world.

My heart calmed a little and my lips turned up a little higher.
