Y/n Pov
"Are you ready?" Jess asks excitedly next to me as we take our seats in front of the stage.
I look back at her and give her a smile while I nod my head. "So ready. Fuck high school." I respond back, nudging her shoulder playfully.
She laughs and nudges me back, she catches me by surprise though when she takes my hand in hers and I see tears well in her eyes. "We made it y/n. You made it. Honestly, I have no idea what I would do if I didn't have you here. Just this morning I was thinking about that night you came to my house.." She continues, when her voice chokes up, she clears her throat.
"I know, me too." I say as tears fill my eyes again once again this morning. I squeeze her hand and she squeezes mine tighter back. "I know I never said it before Jess, but you saved my life that night." I say as I choke back tears.
Jess drops my hands and hugs me tightly as she sits next to me. I wrap my arms around her too. "And you have saved mine everyday since that night. You're what made my life bearable. I love you so much girl." She says into my shoulder.
Her words sink in deep, Jess isn't an emotional or sentimental person unless you're really close with her, and even then it's a rare sight to see. So I cherish the moment we share. "I love you too Jess." I say into her shoulder before we both pull back and giggle at each other trying to fix our makeup.
A few moments later the Principal comes over the microphone from on stage, clearing his throat before he begins to speak. "Graduates, friends, family. I welcome you all to this year's class of two-thousand and twenty three. This year has put all of you through challenges, you have made tough decisions, solved hard problems, fought and forgiven, failed and succeeded. You have done your best and for that reason you are sitting here today ready to receive your diplomas and carry these lessons with you as you move on in life. I am proud of each and every one of you, you have worked hard for twelve plus years to get to this moment. My one last piece of advice for you is this. Cherish it, revel in it, remember it. These years and the ones after are the ones that shape us into who we are. After all, it not is not our failures that determine our success in life, it is our response. Standing back up and trying again and again until we reach our goals, and I know that every one of you can do it, as I myself have done it."
The speech was moving, you could hear a mix of sniffles, whistles and clapping as he neared the end. The principal smiled down at us as he finished his speech. "Now, let's get on with the diplomas so you can all celebrate." The crowd roared in cheers and applause.
The names were called as we all stood and made a line in the rows and up towards the stage. It seemed both like ages and not enough time to prepare myself to walk across the stage and not fall on my face. Once people received their diplomas they circled back to the rows to stand so we could throw our caps up at the end.
Before long he called "Jessica Miles" and Jess walked across the stage with confidence as her family, me, our friends and my found family cheered loudly for her. Then it was my turn.
"Y/n Everhart." I stepped on to the stage and began to walk across towards the principal waiting with my diploma in his hand and ready for me to shake his. I swear I could feel the roars of cheers vibrating inside of me, or maybe it was my heart going a million miles an hour, who knows?
I shook his hand with a smile as he passed me my diploma and we took our picture before I moved towards the other end of the stage, trying not to watch my feet as Rowena taught me. 'Watch the crowd dear, not your feet. After all, they're here to adore you.' Her chipper voice echoes in my head. As I walk down the steps I do a quick scan of the crowd, but it doesn't take long for me to spot my group. Leave it to Rowena to get a prime seat right at the front for a group of seven.
