You Belong With Me

You're on the phone with your girlfriend, she's upset
She's going off about something that you said
'Cause she doesn't get your humor like I do

Will was on the phone with her, placating her over some perceived slight, his brow furrowed in a way that made Nico's own heart furrow in sympathy. Drew never got Will's jokes, his love for obscure medical trivia, or the quiet moments of contemplation Nico knew he cherished.

I'm in the room, it's a typical Tuesday nightI'm listening to the kind of music she doesn't like
And she'll never know your story like I do

But she wears short skirtsI wear T-shirts
She's Cheer Captain, and I'm on the bleachers
Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find
That what you're looking for has been here the whole time

She was all glitter and superficiality, a cheerleader captain to Will's reserved doctor in training.

If you could see that I'm the oneWho understands you
Been here all along
So, why can't you see?
You belong with me
You belong with me

Nico, by contrast, understood Will on a cellular level. He'd been by his side through monster attacks, late-night infirmary shifts, and existential dread brought on by prophecies.

Walk in the streets with you in your worn-out jeans
I can't help thinking this is how it ought to be
Laughing on a park bench thinking to myself
Hey, isn't this easy?

He listened to Will's ramblings about medicinal plants with rapt attention, chuckled at his dark humor, and reveled in those comfortable silences.

And you've got a smile
That can light up this whole town
I haven't seen it in a while
Since she brought you down

But Nico was in the shadows, a ghost in the machine, while Drew was a dazzling spotlight hogging all of Will's attention. She wore bright, skimpy clothes that screamed for attention, while Nico favored his usual black attire, comfortable and familiar.

You say you're fine, I know you better than that
Hey, what you doing with a girl like that?

He wasn't a hero, not in the traditional sense, but he'd always been there for Will, a constant presence on the sidelines, rooting him on.

She wears high heels
I wear sneakers
She's Cheer Captain, and I'm on the bleachers
Dreaming about the day when you wake up and find
That what you're looking for has been here the whole time

But she wore high heels while Nico wore sneakers. She was cheer captain while Nico's on the bleachers.

If you could see that I'm the one
Who understands you
Been here all along
So, why can't you see?
You belong with me

A bitter laugh escaped Nico's lips. Will deserved better than someone who only saw him as an arm candy. He deserved someone who saw the depths of his soul, the kindness that hid beneath his gruff exterior. Someone like Nico.

Standing by and waiting at your backdoor
All this time how could you not know, baby?
You belong with me

You belong with me

Will's smile, usually so warm and genuine, looked strained as he hung up the phone. Nico ached for him, for the easy laughter and carefree joy that seemed to have been choked out of him by Drew's constant demands.

Oh, I remember you driving to my house
In the middle of the night
I'm the one who makes you laugh
When you know you're 'bout to cry
And I know your favorite songs
And you tell me 'bout your dreams
Think I know where you belong
Think I know it's with me

He longed to walk beside Will, not some manicured cheerleader, to share a laugh on a park bench, a simple moment that spoke volumes more than any grand gesture.

Can't you see that I'm the one
Who understands you?
Been here all along
So, why can't you see?
You belong with me

But Nico was stuck on the bleachers, relegated to the role of silent observer. He yearned for the day Will would finally see him, the one who truly understood him, the one who had been by his side all along.

Standing by and waiting at your backdoor
All this time how could you not know, baby?
You belong with me
You belong with me
You belong with me
Have you ever thought just maybe
You belong with me?
You belong with me

Will just needed to open his eyes, to see that Nico was the one who belonged with him.
