Seoul is so beautiful at night, Jennie sighs, looking out the train window, lost in her thoughts. She readjusts her AirPods as her favourite K-pop song plays.

I recently moved back to Seoul from New Zealand because of a lengthy divorce between my parents. I was so accustomed to my dad's constant abuse that not having him around felt a bit strange...

My mom decided that after going through such a difficult divorce and becoming a single mother, it would be best to move into my grandmother's place for more "support".

I had to roll my eyes when she said that... Grandma isn't the most supportive type. Seriously, she's always trying to micromanage my life. It was her who pressured Mom into marrying Dad so young, not caring if he was a walking red flag...

The music in my ears grows louder as I start to zone out, looking at the skyscrapers as they flash by. I'm on my way to see my childhood best friends: Rose, Irene, and Nayeon. We've been friends for years, even though we didn't live in the same part of the globe.

I used to visit Australia to see Rose, and Irene and Nayeon would spend the whole summer in either New Zealand or Australia.

As the train rolled to a stop at its final destination, I gathered my belongings, feeling the icy sting of the winter night as I stepped onto the deserted platform.

The cold seemed to seep into my bones despite the layers of clothing I wore. My red scarf wrapped snugly around my neck, and my oversized Gucci jumper provided some respite against the biting chill. With each step, my Doc Marten boots crunched softly against the frozen ground;

Rose lives in student accommodation close to our university. We attend one of the only fashion schools in Seoul, so it's a large institution with over 1000 students. This meant that there were plenty of drunk teenagers laughing and stumbling in the streets. I made my way through the crowds, my breath forming small clouds as I exhaled

I finally reach my friend's house and knock loudly, and can hear muffled noises and scuffling from behind the door. Rose finally opens the door, and a welcome party greets me.

Rose has a huge bowl of popcorn, half in her mouth and some on the floor. "Popcorn, babe?" she grins, the usual chaos written all over her face as she tries to hand me some wet popcorn from her hand. "No, thanks," I gag.

Irene and Nayeon appear from behind her. Irene is rocking a clay face-mask on her petite face with her hair up in a messy bun. "Stop standing at the door; you're letting all the heat out, gosh," Irene growls as she pulls me inside.
