The room is glowing in soft candlelight. All of my family members are already seated around a  long table that spans the whole dinning hall. My eyes sweep over every face - my aunts, uncles, grandparents, and what feels like a small army of cousins.

And then I see something I definitely don't expect.

At the end of the table are two people I don't recognize... and between them sits a tall boy I unfortunately do recognize.

Kai.

I swear under my breath. What the hell is he doing here? My brows tighten automatically as I slide into the seat next to my mother, never taking my eyes off him.

He sits there calmly, pretending to be innocent, but I know better.

He's the devil in disguise.

"Now that Jennie's here," Grandmother begins to speak,

"we can begin. But before the main announcement, allow me to introduce the Young family and their son, Kai."

My stomach tightens.

Grandma goes on to explain, "The Young family has had an amazing year, full of remarkable achievements. Mr. Young has become the chairman of his own hospital."

Okay and?

The room fills with polite applause.
I don't join in.

None of this explains why they're here. Why he's here.

Grandma's tone shifts, and the entire atmosphere turns heavy.

Her eyes drift toward me and my mother - sharp, disappointed, judgmental.

"As for our family," she says, "we've experienced a few... embarrassments this year. As you all know, my daughter has divorced her husband of nineteen years."

I feel the weight of the family's eyes on me, everyone muttering their opinions on the divorce. I turn and see my mum's eyes start to get glossy as she looks down at her hands.

Anger bubbles up in my stomach, is she for real?!

My Grandmother still to this day can't except that she was wrong. She was the reason the marriage failed,  she paired them up, she knew my dad was crazy!

I place my hand on my mothers for some encouragement.

"But that wrong can be made right,"  she continues

 my breath catches.

"Let's combine the Young and Kim families through the matrimony of Kai and Jennie. Mind you, this has already been agreed upon by the head of the families. By the heavens' grace this marriage will take place," Jennie's grandmother smiles.

She smiles.

My heart plummets.

Kai looks at me with a small, satisfied smile.
Of course he does.

"This can't be real. I'm not marrying him!" I shout, slamming my palms on the table.

"Silence yourself, Jennie!" Grandma snaps, her voice slicing through the room. Every pair of eyes locks onto me. My throat dries. My chest tightens. I can't breathe.

I push myself up so fast the table shakes.
I look at my mother, begging her to do something—to say anything—but she won't even meet my eyes.

That hurts the most. Are you going to let your only child suffer the same fate as you?

I turn and run, sprinting through the corridor until I reach my room. I slam the door and lock it, the sound echoing like a gunshot.

This can't be happening.
I'm nineteen. I just started uni. Heck, I haven't even had a boyfriends yet. I've been saving myself for someone who actually cares—someone who can make me laugh, someone who loves me, not... him. Are you saying this was all for nothing? — Cause there where many guys I turned down who are ten times better then he is.

Kai is every nightmare wrapped into one person.

He's always been relentless, hitting on me at family events no matter how clearly I rejected him.

And I'll never forget what happened three years ago at my grandfather's memorial.

I was sitting on the front steps, crying - my parents had just started their divorce. I was shattered. And he walked up to me, leaned down, and said, in the most disgusting, cheesy voice:

"You're too stunning to cry."

Then his hand slid up my thigh.

I jerked away, terrified, and ran inside. But he followed me. Stopped me in the hallway. Pushed me against the wall.

"Listen, Jennie," he whispered in my ear, "I've been trying to get you to date me for years. What's it gonna take? I've got money, looks, and a whole lot of power... so let's make this easy."

My skin crawls remembering it.

He was right about one thing - he does have power.

Enough to trap me.

My eyes sting, exhaustion pulling me under.
Maybe... maybe I'll forget about all of this tomorrow.

But I know I won't.
