Everyone stands impatiently in the driveway of the hotel. It's 2:30 AM, and our flight back home is at 4:00 AM. Whose bright idea was it to have a barbecue that served alcohol to a bunch of young adults until midnight when we're supposed to catch a flight at 4:00 AM? I only got two hours of sleep! I'm exhausted.
I watch my classmates sway, trying to keep their eyes open as they lug their suitcases onto the bus.
"Okay, class, is that everything?! Please make sure you have your stuff," the teacher says, clearly frazzled. You can tell she's struggling to hold it together. She's been a champ, but this long trip with 40+ students is getting to her.
"Chase, don't make me tell you again. Stand in line!" Ms. Yoon shouts, slapping her clipboard on her knee. Yep, she's at her breaking point. I better get in line before I'm the next target.
I quickly pull my suitcase across the parking lot and load it onto the minibus.
"So here's what's going to happen," the teacher continues. "See that coach behind you? In an orderly fashion, get onto the bus." She starts lecturing us like children as if we can't see the big bus behind us. I roll my eyes.
"Then I want you to sit with the people in your rooms, including Jennie and Lisa sitting with Mia and Yumin," she adds, pulling a serious face as she catches me rolling my eyes. I instinctively stand up straighter.
Everybody rushes to board the coach like wild animals. Mia and Yumin stand beside me, and we watch as everyone pushes each other out of the way for a good seat.
"Wow, it's like Noah's ark," Yumin says, staring in awe.
I cross my arms and follow behind them, slowly making my way up the stairs of the bus. When we get inside, we walk all the way to the back, where we find four seats divided by a picnic-style table.
I put my hand luggage on the overhead shelves and shuffle into a window seat.
"Ah, I'm so tired," Mia moans as she sits opposite me on the other side of the table.
I start making myself comfortable, putting my neck pillow around my neck and snuggling up under my travel blanket. It's going to be an hour-long car ride, and I just plan to sleep.
"The bus is taking off soon, so put on your seat belts and settle down," the teacher shouts.I'm not putting on my seatbelt. It's a coach; we should be fine.
