You were exhausted after the third Keepers trial. Facing death, even if it was just a powerful spell, almost finished you.
The Keepers kept giving you pieces of the story and even though you've passed all their trials and followed all their instructions, they still didn't trust you enough to tell you the location of the Repository. They didn't care that the fate of the wizarding world was at stake and you couldn't figure out why. That was the reason for your meeting with Professor Fig in his office to talk about your concerns, hoping that maybe the both of you could come up with a different strategy to end this.
"There has to be something else we can do, professor. They don't trust us and we are running out of time". You collapsed in one of the chairs in front of his heavy old desk. Wishing you could lay down your head for a minute.
"I know you are right, child. But there is nothing we can't do. If only I had Miriam's journal" he moved his hands to his chest as he always did whenever he thought of his deceased wife.
"Professor, we can't do this on our own. I know I'm the only one who can wield ancient magic, but there is so much that I can not do. These trials and quests are already feeling like a heavy burden" You gave him a sad and tired sight, doing your best to keep your voice from breaking.
"I know. And I'm sorry for putting you in this position, my young friend. But it is too risky to share this information with anyone outside this room." He didn't look at you. His sight was riveted in his hands, lying still together on his desk.
A part of you felt like your mentor just staved you. He didn't care.
"Please professor" you begged and stood up "What's risky is to keep fighting on our own when Ranrok and Rookwood have an army! There has to be someone you trust. Perhaps Professor Weasley, or Sharp, or Hecate?" you were tired and desperate, you felt like your legs could fail you at any second, but you had to bring some sense into him.
"I feel your concern, MC. But if we look for allies I fear the Keepers won't trust us anymore. They asked us to keep it a secret. Their help is indispensable to us."
"Help?" This time he was looking at you, but what did it matter if he didn't want to listen? "These trials are nothing but a waste of time. We are far too deep in this mess to keep keeping secrets, Eleazar. " calling him by his first name felt weird, but you thought it might help him see the precarious situation you were facing. "And if we want the slitless chance to defeat Ranrok and protect the ancient magic, I can't do it alone."
He listened to you for a moment but said nothing.
You couldn't believe it, you didn't want to believe it. He didn't need to speak for you to know he did not support you, that he would take the Keeper's side without listening to anything you had to say.For the first time, you felt alone and helpless. Everyone thought of you as this capable wizard, even without knowing about your ancient magic, but you didn't feel capable nor powerful anymore but more like, for the first time, you felt like the tired mess of a child you were.
"I'll think about it" he finally answered, standing up and walking you out of his office "For now please go rest and eat something. I'll send you an owl tomorrow. Maybe the Keepers would be ready to reveal the last trial to you by then"
You left his office without saying anything else, with watery eyes, you walked until you found a proper corner, where nobody would be able to hear you and there you crumbled. The tears came out like a river, cries of angst and despair. How did everything come to this? Did Professor Fig was neglecting you? Was he being selfish for the greater good? Or those his faith in you so blind that he truly believed you could defeat Ranrok, Rookwood, and their followers on your own? either way, you wouldn't allow it anymore.
You wiped your tears and got up. You might have been at Hogwarts for a short time, but surely you knew the people you could trust by now, it was time to go get them and tell them the whole truth about your magic.
Let me know who would you trust with your ancient magic
